It may be advertising, but mobil ultimate in my area is supposedly very good, it's crystal clear.

However, i find that shell or amoco usually gives me better performance. I also liked texaco, but is not in my area anymore. All are 93 octane, which is the best around here in chicago.

I've been using Amoco Premium for 12 years now and the proof was when I rejetted the carbs on my bike. After 7 years of not storing it properly for the off season, not one spec of varnish in the bowls! I'm sold.

Default 100 octane

The gas station in Pasadena that has good 100 octane is 76. Mobil stations seems okay most of the time...

100 OCTANE?!?

The highest here around South LA County and the entire Orange County is 92!

What Octance and give the GS max performance? Is it dependent on the compression ratio?

this thread has a little debate about octane and performance...

Default Boosted....

I sometimes will fill my tank up with 100 octane JUST when I am pushing my motor to the limited. For me it is about detonation under boost, I am pushing 10psi with stock compression(10:5;1) so having a little insurance helps.

Most gas stations in my area - Los Angeles - carry 92 octane which is good for 99% of the cars on the road today. The problem I've had to deal with is certain gas stations seem to have dirty/waterdown gas at times. One station fuel actually caused my car to ping until I add some high octane 76 gas.

There are very few stations that sell "racing" gas here in L.A. county,I just lucky to live by one...

Price per gallon: 4.23$ Expensive is saying it lightly....Just think, some countries in Europe pay more then that for their normal gas. Ouch....

Several years ago I had an acquaintance in the oil/gas business who told me that all gas of the same octane is basically the same.

When one brand's tanks are low on supply they buy and swap with each other. The differentiation is marketing.

That doesn't mean that a particular gas station might not have water or sediment in the tank. Those are to be avoided. But my acquaintance's claim is that one brand of clean 92 octane is no better than the other.

Here in Atlanta gas is cheap ($1.47/gal premium) 'cause we have the lowest state gas tax in the country. But the national brands like Amoco and Mobil are higher than the others. BP seems to be the highest.

Thus, I use the lowest priced premium at a name brand That includes the regionals such as Race Track or QT. (I stay away from the "Joe and Harry's gas, sushi bar and sea shell" places).

The highest octane I've seen at a pump here is 93. I've seen octane boosters that will put you up to 100, and with the 10.5 boosted compression ration, it seems like the right way to go. I've never seen 100 at a pump.

Almost correct RM,
I work (will work again very soon) in Oil/gas...the only real difference is the additives that each major brand puts in the gas...they are all the same when they leave the refinery. the additive makes up less than 3% ,if not mistaken. and the additives are designed to prevent carbon buildup, and prevent fuel injector clogs. But they do spend millions trying to tell you it wil make your car turn into gold. Just avoid places that are not a major. all the majors buy and sell gas from each other...It's a commodity. I think Mean Gene also works in Oil and Gas, he might be able to give us a full thesis (I only work in the IT department).

Default I Agree!!

mG & others - I hit the wrong button & ended up posting a "Best Gas" reply as a new thread! Been in the oil/gas business as an engineer for 19+ years but mostly in E&P or Drilling. Have a little refinery experience & can tell ya'll that it's all pretty much the same except for the additives, as mG accurately stated. Big Brother sets the minimum standards & it's up to the individual companies to exceed them but at additional costs. This goes for oil as well as gasoline. I've also seen our trucks go from one brand-name station ( Texaco ), fill their tanks & then dump the remainder across the highway into a Shell station tank!! As long as the local distributor supplies more than one brand-name station, this stuff happens. In defense of this practice, they won't dump Texaco gas into XYZ's gas station because of the cost differences the station owners pay per gallon. Stay with the brand names & U'll be OK. Based on the benchmark BMW fuel standards, the top scores go to Shell; Chevron; Amoco; Hess & Exxon/Mobil, in no particular order. This data is from a 2000 survey conducted by AAA & API but I don't have it handy to post - Sorry!
