On ALL GS's 98-2000 HIDs were optional. For 2001-2005 HID's were standard for the GS430 and optional on the GS300. As for the projector and stuff is all custom work. The official term for it is "HID projector retrofit". The HID kit is a system where you just plug it in to the halogen housing and you will have HID. The light output is not quite as good as a projector or the factory HID headlights. There will also be more glare. However, the HID kit is the cheapest option.

You can find more info on this just search up on it. I've actually posted some VERY long posts about this subject several times in the past. Someone just did $4000 of damange on my car so I'm not quite in the mood to explain the whole HID thing right now. Usually I'm vey patitent and answer all lighting questions anyone asks but not now

you can tell if you have factory HIDs by looking at the front clear lense. if it says d2r, you have HIDs. if it says 9006, you have halogen.

as for projectors, you can fit most projectors in the market because our housings are very large. the best i've seen so far is the ls430 mod by vicestan. do a search and you'll know what i'm talking about. q45 projects looks cool but will not perform next to a ls430 or s2000 projectors.

D2R is for a reflector based housing...AKA: stock gs housing
D2S is for a projector based unit. New lexus cars: LS430, 3G GS430, Retrofits and stuff
9006 bulb is stock low beam halogens on GS's

Difference is that the D2R has a opaque black stripe down the middle of the bulb to reduce glare on a reflector type housing. In a D2S bulb that stripe is not there because the optics in a projector type unit focuses the light much more sharply and eliminates the need for the black strip. Halogens, well those just plain suck

Oh yea, not to mention, the D2S and D2R bulbs have their notch (for mounting) on opposite side.
