Default Hard Disk GPS update information - new update coming!

I was just at Westminster, CA Lexus this afternoon picking up some touchup paint and asked the parts manager about doing an update on my 2000 GS400's GPS system. He told me that about mid January there will be a new update for the hard disk drive GPS systems.

I reminded him that the car has the hard disk drive system, and not the DVD system, and that the last update was done in 2003 - and "was he sure" that there was a new update coming for the hard disk drive units. And, he said "Yes, the update will be for the hard disk drive GPS systems".

Well I'll be waiting till January for that one. Not sure if anyone else has heard this - so wanted to post and let everyone know. I hope he's correct!

Anyone else have any information about this? Please post ...

Default I was told the hard drive was maxed out

Well that would suck for me since I just spent $400 on the 2003 upgrade which I was told was absolutely the LAST upgrade for the hard drive version because they'd maxed out the space on the hard drive.
Keep us posted though if this in fact is true and there is in fact a 2006 version

I too had read here that the 2003 update was the last one -- that's why I asked the parts manager a couple times if he was sure about this. The proof will be when I go back in January and it really is available. I'll post and let everyone know if it comes in.

Perhaps if anyone else takes their car into a Lexus dealer they could ask there and we can see if we're getting the same story throughout the nation.

Also an FYI.......Those DVD based disc's are dual layed disc's.....so if anyone needs to "back-up" there disc on there PC......and burn a copy if something goes wrong with the new one they get. It can be done.

I have the 03 update in my GS. I have purchased a Garmin C330 recently for my other vehicles. The Garmin is much easier to use than my OEM Navigation. The OEM unit is also missing lots of details and only covers the major cities in my state.

If they're just standard hard disc drives, why don't they just use like Seagate or Hitachi 300GB and just have you purchase the drive in which they load the Navi Software on it and swap the drive for you for whatever the cost is of the new HDD? I mean you can get those under 200.

They make this alot harder than it has to be. Why don't they just sell new HDD preloaded with the 06 software? I mean even if its 300 its still worth it because you have the newest update plus tons of storage. I highly doubt the entire US/North America takes up all 300 GB of data even with 20 million points of interest which no Car Navi system has reached yet (including aftermarket)

DVD i believe can hold around 8GB, hard drives can hold way over 200GB, so whats the reason why Lexus can't keep up with the upgrades.

hahhaa, think of it this way. put your 200gb hdd to an old 486 system and see if it will even recognise it?

you need to have certain hardware and such to recognize the hdd, you can't just snap everything on. my guess is the 98-00 nav unit it can only recognize up to certain size hdd. which might make sense?
