Unhappy GS300: 30k Service Costs - Sticker Shock

Lexus dealer quoted me $495 for the 30k service.

Toyota dealer just charged me $372 for same service (that includes the $30 cabin filter too). They told me it's essentially the Avalon 30k service, as the cars are almost identical underneath.

[There is no Lexus dealer in my home town, and according to Toyota, I am allowed to have service done by any Toyota dealer if the Lexus dealer is not located in my home town...and my warranty is secure.]

Does anybody else have sticker shock from the Lexus service prices?

Lexus dealers here in IL try to stick you with WAY more service than what is required. For instance, most here want to change your trans fluid at 15K - Lexus does not call for it until 30K however. That adds $115+ to your service bill in un-needed costs.

I believe that you can have your service done anywhere you like - as long as you do it and have proof you are covered by the warranty.

However, if it is not in the system and you have a failure outside of warranty, they might be less likely to help out.

I just picked up my car and was hit $37 for an oil change (my old dealer was $25). But to the dealer's credit, they gave me a loaner and washed my car. So not too bad of a deal, all things considered.

My dealer charges 49 bucks for oil change. Although my service lady always hooks me up and I end up paying half price. They do the car wash thing too. and loaner. Car wash is half a$$.

It all boils down to the Service Writer....They are there to be the sales rep for the service dept.... They are trained in sales and have to sell everything they possibly can...they work on a form of commision so whatever it takes they will try to get you....Don't get me wrong..not all of them are like this..there are some good ones out there...honest and trustworthy, but its the bad ones that give that bad rep....

Default can't complain

My service rep (writer, whatever,I never knew what they were called) is awesome. We are now buddies. She always gives me half price oil changes and warranties anything I ask for. Gives me my choice of avail loaners and gets me in on short notice.
Maybe it's because I'm still under warranty, but my Lexus dealer takes good care of me. For this reason I will prob buy extended warranty before mine is up next April.

Warranty work since I bought car(01 430-23k mi) 3 months ago

4 Brake rotors turned
Replaced L on grill
Replaced rear differential
Replaced driver side half shaft

Like I said...not all of them are like that.....it's good that you have a Service writer to take care of you...she probably has a good reputation with all of her customers.

You gotta expect premium prices for service on a premium brand name automobile... Regardless if it IS a Toyota, it IS still branded as a Lexus... The esteem factor and all that jazz.

A friend of mine used to work at a Jag dealer (about 15 years ago). He told me how they would charge $1,200 for the 15K mile service and it took them all of 2 hours. When I asked why they charged so much his response was "cause we can".

Basically what Dislexic (cool name BTW) is saying is that we are paying for the "crystal chandelier" in the showroom and I think he is right.
