I only count 2 injuries and thankfully no deaths... I have a strange feeling things might have actually of been worse if the airbags had deployed according to the evidence presented.

EDIT: I was involved in a very high speed collission and partly used my own experience also. I total'ed a 1993 SC 400 and the air bags did NOT deploy in a major collission and I believe if they did I could of been hurt much worse. I suffered no injuries as a result of the incident.

i have a salvage yard and you might be suprised how many front end collisions come in with good air bags.

Unhappy

I hit a telephone pole head on going 40-50 mph after hydroplaning in my '94 gs300 and the airbags did not deploy. I then called Lexus to have them do an investigation and they acted like it was no big deal and shrugged it off. I had a hard time getting a lawyer involved so I gave up on it. Just my two cents

this one sounds fishy. The GS400 has no hand brake, plus the handle is made out of plastic, it would have snapped in half if that was the case... either way, this is a serious problem. If anyone hears any resolutions, please post!

I had a 2000 BMW 540I that was hit while I was stopped n traffic, by a car gonig approx 50 to 60 mph... she braked for a split second before impact. The car was smashed in up to the rear seats......the air bags did not deploy! I found that to be F'd up as well.

Hmm, I really don't know what to say. Lexus, as well as many other manufacturers, build "crumple zones" into the frames of their cars so that these areas can absorb most of the impact, which could realistically alleviate the need for airbags in certain situations. These days airbags deal with everything from sensors to speed of the vehicle to the height and weight of the person in a certain seat.

Like others have said, I don't think that airbags deploying in every wreck is necessarily a good thing. There are also several cases where airbags do more HARM than good. With all of the new crash technology- crumple zones, sensors, pre collision systems, ect, I think we should instill a bit more faith into these cars than we are. I really believe that a car knows when to deploy the airbags and when not to.

I thought Airbags only deploy when a the front of the car is affected, like in a head on accident?

If you're rear ended, the occupants would be thrown back toward their seats if anything. The opposite goes for a front end crash, occupants will lunge forward toward the windshield, thus the need for front airbags.
