Sorry for the long post but I am VERY passionate about this very specific topic: when is it worth it to swap to a manual transmission in our cars?

Since it is a HUGE expense just to get the V160 trans and diff, I wouldn't recommend the V160 swap unless you have a Supra TT MKIV as a donor car since you will need basically everything from that car to get your money's worth - and while you are at it just get the motor too. I have been hunting for a totaled (t-boned) MKIV TT Supra for 5 years with no luck (owners usually want 10K+ for a totaled one).

The cheapest would be a W58 or W55 on the N/A motor.

If you are planning to go NA/T, my best recommendation is to just simply get a 1JZ/R154 motorset from a MKIII Chaser/Cresta/MKII as this would be way more economical than turboing your motor AND swapping an R154.

You can go the long way and get a JDM Aristo motor and source an R154 separately - it won't be cheap though.

Here are some prices:

W58/W55 (MKIV Supra NA or 1st Gen IS300): These trans can be found in the 400 - 800 range.
V160: Just the transmission, USED, they go for $2.1K+, sometimes reaching 6K USED. I have never seen this transmission lower than 2K. And then good luck finding the diff that goes with it. All in all, this transmission will end up costing you $5K+ with the diff. IMHO, not worth going through this unless you have the money to go all the way and do a 2J from either a MKIV or an Aristo.
R154: Market price is between 1K to 2K+

If you buy a manual 1JZ motorset this will run you about $3.2K - thats a manual trans AND a 1JZ. Yank your NA engine and sell it for 500 and that would give you some money back. the VVTi version of the 1J is also a good option but a little more expensive.

An Aristo motorset runs about $2.2K+. You can source an R154 for about $1.5K (sometimes less if you are lucky) and you got yourself a nice motorset as well.

The devil is in the details - but the most important thing about ANY project is your goal: what do you want your car to do. Is this a drift/track project? just a nice street car? VIP style? showcar?

If I was building a track car I would go the Aristo motorset + R154.

If I was building a show car I would go MKIV Supra complete swap (V160 plus everything else)

If I was building a nice street car I would go 1JZ manual motorset

If I just wanted a manual transmission on my NA, I would do a W58 from a MKIV Supra NA

For my VIP project, I am aiming to keep it auto and get a JDM 1UZ Aristo motorset

I hope my opinion helps you make the best choice for your goal and good luck with your project!
