Red belly Piranha $5 shipped to midwest!!
Red belly is considered the best bet if you want to own a piranha as a pet, since it is less aggressive than other breed of piranhas. However, it is prudent not to keep it with other fishes as it attacks almost anything moving (except other piranhas).
1” red belly piranha for $5 each. (No shipping charge for the Midwest zip code I tried).

Red Bellies are reasonably easy to maintain & take care of, but you do have to keep the tank clean, warm, and the fish free of parasites/fungus. They can be skittish but actually warm up to observers over time. It's good to keep some vegetation/plant-life and wall-mounted cave'like dwellings for them to hover in & around.
Sucker-fishes w/ the thick armor-like scales/skin are good to keep the aquarium clean & won't generally get attacked. Anything else will be killed eventually, whether frogs/snails/fish/salamanders/crayfish/etc'. However, certain cyclid species actually can rival the piranhas in terms of bullieness, but the piranhas are ever-persistent in provoking stuff, regardless the tank'mate. . .
Also feeding them too many goldfish will stunt their growth. Early on, it's good to feed them brine-shrimp, once they get larger, you can move onto kitchen scraps (chicken, beef, seafood, etc'). Occasional live-feedings of feeder-fish is also good for them. . .
Not to mention they'll nimble on eachother's fins/tails on a regular basis, it's just their cannibalistic nature.
Black piranha ("Rhoms") are the ones difficult to keep/manage, and need to be kept isolated, etc'. They are nasty lookin' & generally solitary. . .
Say hello to my (past) lil' friends...
