The "Journey" to Better Mileage

In January 2009 I purchased a 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid and decided that I wanted to learn to drive in a manner to get better gas mileage. Supsequently, I have traded for a 2010 Lexus HS250h to have more cabin space room and comfort.

I have learned a few things along the way.

The key to getting better mileage in any vehicle is the driver. While I am a conservative driver by nature ... I still had to break some old habits and learn new skills.

Driving for better mileage is a set of compromises that is ever changing. How to get the best mileage, be safe with surrounding traffic, and not make other drivers too upset w/you.

Driving for better mileage is hard work. It forces you to become very attentive to what your vehicle is doing, the route being driven, traffic patterns, and other factors. An unexpected by-product has been that I believe I am now a safer driver because of paying much more attention to my vehicle and the surroundings.

I have learned Hypermiling techniques that have definitely helped improve mileage. Sites like CleanMPG.com provide a tremendous amount of useful information and has very helpful individuals.

A Scanguage or similar tool is a must to provide instant feedback on what is actually happening with a vehicle instead of just guessing.

Lastly ... it is an on-going journey. Some days are a step forward ... and others are a step back.

The "Journey" has yeilded these results this year:
2009 Honda Civic Hybrid: 13225 miles and 53.45 mpg
2010 Lexus HS250h: 1500 miles and 46.24 mpg

I think as the HS breaks in and I continue this journey and as skills improve ... the mileage will only go up.

I just ordered a SGM/Gray HS250h with nav. The car does not have the LED headlights, so I want to install a aftermarket kit.

Does anyone know what size/number bulbs they are?

TIA!

My current Audi A4 has a very useful blind spot detection (which they call "side assist"). According to Audi's description:

Active at speeds over 19 MPH, the Audi side assist system monitors the blind spot areas, as well as fast approaching vehicles, at a range of about 150 ft. to the rear of the car. If Audi side assist identifies another vehicle, it informs the driver via LED lights in the exterior mirror.

Basically, if you turn your turn signal on to change lanes, and there is potentially a car in the way, LED lights in the side view mirrors flash. I've found it very useful.

I cant tell from Lexus' description if their lane departure system is only concerned about the lines on the road, or if it also detects cars as well.

This is a deal killer for me. I've got an Audi A3 and a Lexus RX 400h, and we're thinking of trading in the Audi for the HS 250h. But alas, someone at Lexus thought it a bad idea to include such a basic feature as folding rear seats, so we're going to have to find something else.

Why am I making such a big deal of this? Folding rear seats mean you can purchase nearly anything at Home Depot and actually bring it home without strapping it to the roof (or swapping for the SUV). It increases a vehicle's utility twentyfold. I once moved in nothing but a 2-door Acura Integra. Folding seats convert a small coupe into a minivan.

So, hopefully they'll bring it about as a mid-cycle revision.

I drove my second HS today; I had driven a non-nav edition last week, but the one today had nav and the Wide-view Front Monitor . Of all the gadgets on this car, THIS is the most interesting...watchin' that nav screen slowly rise from the dash, and then as you shift into D, the area in front of the car displayed as you pull forward (and depending on the settings, that view remains visible until you reach a certain MPH); it was just a bit like 'Blade Runner'. OK, I'm stretchin' it I know, but sheesh that's a cool feature. (We guys need our toys.)

- Overall, I was very pleased with the comfort and quietness of the HS. I've owned both a Camry Hybrid and a Prius, and neither were quiet or comfortable (and I sold them both within a month). Hey, I'm spoiled, I like the seats in a Lexus, along with the luxury of copious soundproofing. NVH can be very stressful, and I will gladly pay for quiet; if I want noise, that's why Kline Kreisel made the subwoofer (and maybe it was Dr. Bose or Mark Levinson who perfected it).

- The cockpit is small, but I'm 6'1", "stocky", and I still had plenty of headroom/legroom. The seat is not quite as wide as my current RX or previous Lexi, but it's just as comfy.

- Power? Ha, no worries. The salesman keeps punchin' the "Power" button to demo the car's thrust, but even in the default normal mode, if you need to gun this sucka it moves.

- Nav: The voice control is miles ahead of all the nav systems I've had. Amazing. The "joystick" is great, but actually redundant since almost anything you need can be spoken for or found on the dash via buttons. Major example: While you're driving, you can click the voice command button on the steering wheel, speak your way thru locating an exact street address, set it as your destination, and have the system start giving you directions; in other words, you don't hafta pull over and stop to enter a destination. That is huge.

- Terrific slideshow of a Matador Red HS at http://bit.ly/39aLmv
