oil change: free or not free
Good Morning guys ( & gals ) I was wondering whether or not Lexus provided 1 or 2 " free " oil changes. I'm pretty sure there was a thread covering this topic once before but my search for that thread yielded zero results so if there was another thread, my apologies. I know Lexus recommends oil changes every 10K... But I prefer changing oil every 5K miles... so back around June I took the car in and got my oil changed. At that time the service writer told me that "normally" lexus pays for your oil change at 10k miles, but since I wanted my oil changed at 5K, they would just go ahead and do that oil change for free.. So now my car has just hit the 10K mark and I take it in to get the oil changed and tires rotated, fully expecting to pay for this one... Had a loaner ready for me and when I went to pick my car a couple of hours later, the service writer says " no charge". it's free.. Not wanting to feel like i was pulling a fast one over on the guy, I explained to him that I got a free oil change at 5K.. he says, not a problem - that Lexus pays for two free oil changes... GREAT... but odd since Lexus recommends oil changes every 10 k miles.... Just curious as to what Lexus policy on oil changes really is...

The first maintenance event at 5k includes tire rotation, inspection of brake pads, check fluids, etc. NO FREE OIL CHANGE. The second at 10k includes a free oil change, rotation of tires, fluid check, etc.
So you lucked out and got a free oil change on Lexus.

My dealer did not charge me for the recent oil change at 20K. I did the same thing, tell them that I didn't think the 20K one was free because I did not want to take advantage, but the service adviser told me that the dealership paid for that one. They did charge me for the tire rotation though so mine was not completely free. Perhaps some dealerships have additional perks that Lexus does not cover.

The official Lexus program is a 5k visit with tire rotation + various level and pressure checks and then the 10k which everyone has correctly read includes the first synthetic oil change + all the other 5k stuff.
What happened to me regarding this "unexpected largess" by the dealer was that I bought an extended warr. and it included maintainance and tire/rim protection clauses. When I got a screw in a tire they had me in and out no (additional) charge!

I think it's at the discretion of the dealer whether to provide the second oil change for free or not. Just like other dealers that will pad the recommended service and inflate the base service. Good for you - I think you've found a good service advisor/ dealer to service your car.
