Paint on hood.

I've done it--no issues, but as with all car care products, less is more--don't get in over your head without trying a small inconspicuous area, learn, and follow the instructions. Black is less forgiving than other colors to over zealousness. After Clay, you absolutely need to follow it with a good wax coat on all the areas you clayed.
The Meguiars videos are pretty good. I like their products, too. Everyone has a favorite, but I've had good success with their products, and most are easy to use, apply, and remove without residue.

Honestly, theres too much to teach you about detailing to do it here in this thread. Check out YouTube and visit sites like autopia.org and autogeek.net
People at Lowes or Home Depot will know nothing about properly cleaning a car.

I had tried a Turtle Wax sap removal product, but it didn't do anything.
I then took the car to a detailer. Not the one mentioned earlier in this thread.
He said he would do a clay bar and buff, and gave me an quote of $200.
Once he started, he said some of it wasn't coming off, and he needed to wet sand those parts. Didn't charge me any extra, and stuck with the $200 quote. He spent 3.5 hours on the car. He also said that it usually costs serious money to wetsand.
Here's what the car looked like afterward:

You can view the pics at full resolution, if you want a closer look.
The first 3 pics with the bright sun were taken right after the detail job.
The next two pics were taking a few days later.
After he was done, he said there were still a few small spots that couldn't be removed, but said it might be hard to notice. I only noticed 1 little spot then.
A few days later, I noticed a few more small spots.
Overall though, compared to what the car looked like before, I think the spots are much lighter in color, and you have to look carefully to see them.
The pic of the side of the car, that has the brown truck in the reflection, is where a 2 foot scratch used to be. He was able to remove that, I don't see it at all anymore.
For the last two pics, it might look like part of the clouds, but those areas in red are some more small spots. They are hard to see, though.
Here's what the detailer did:
* Wash
* Clay
* Wet sand
* Polish wool pad and compound
* Polish Styrofoam yellow with some compound
* Polish w/ black pad and w/black polish
* Wash again
* Wax w/ poly seal
