Hi,

Ok, so I got my new (well with 10,000km on it) ES 300h and Lexus ask 100$ for an oil change (every 8000km which sound abusive by the way for a car that run on synthetic oil). I went to Toyota for fun, and they ask 52$ for the same oil change (since it's the same engine then a Camry hybrid), they told me it's the same oil and they do the same check up around the car.

So do there is any particular reason to pay 2 times more to get it done at Lexus (which in my case the Toyota is way closer to my place and they are open until 21h00 where Lexus close at 17h00) so it would be more convenient for me to get it done at Toyota.

No, there is no reason to pay twice as much at the Lexus dealer. You can pay the $52.00, $100.00 at Lexus, or do it yourself. Your choice. Just make sure you keep records of all oil changes. BTW in the USA the oil change schedule is every 10,000 miles using synthetic oil. Your information, every 8000 km. = 4970 miles. Sounds like a rip to me...

If I check in the maintenance schedule, they said that the engine oil and filter have to be replaced every 8000km/6 months.


Anyway, I will probably go to Toyota.

There is no reason why you can't have your service done at a Toyota dealer or, for that matter, at an independent mechanic. For me, the decision not to use the Lexus dealer is an easy choice because the closest Lexus dealers are about a 200 mile round trip, but, typically, the cost of both routine maintenance and repairs at the Toyota dealer has been about 1/2 of what the Lexus dealer charges, and the Toyota dealer uses the same synthetic oil, filters, and other lubricants and parts that the Lexus dealer uses.

Yes, that doesn't sound right. To equal the same/similar 10000 mile oil change interval as is recommended for US vehicles, your recommended interval should be about 16000 km or 1 year, which is the recommended time interval for US vehicles.

It is interesting that, after the 16000 km service, recommended oil change intervals are every 16000 km, which corresponds very closely with the 10000 mile oil change intervals for US vehicles.

I also find it interesting that intervals for many services do not correspond very closely to those for US vehicles. For example, with US vehicles, tire rotations are recommended every 5000 miles. For your vehicle, tire rotations seem to be recommended for 16000 km (10000 mile) intervals. To me, that is further evidence that lots of the recommended maintenance is not absolutely necessary, and the likelihood of doing harm to your vehicle by skipping services other than those in the major service intervals is minimal.

The cost of labor per hour at Lexus dealerships are higher than that of the Toyota dealership. The cost of labor per hour at a Lexus dealership is over $100 (US), That's the main difference in cost.

Note that the category Maintenance Service includes Oil and Filter so oil changes actually comes every 8,000 km which is half of the U.S. interval. So twice as frequent for Canadians.

For other parts like brake pads, wiper blades, rotors, engine filter, cabin air filter, bulbs, etc. Just go to Toyota than Lexus dealership and they would cost less. Luxury dealership will just basically charge you more because of their amenities and luxury looking waiting area.

I ask Lexus Newport Beach for the cost for pair of wiper blades and they charge me $199. I just didn't say anything but man the price was ridiculous. I could just go to Toyota dealership and can get it for around 50 bucks a pair. Different part number though but wiper size and brand are the same.

Wow! The price differential is substantial. Can the Toyota Parts Dept. match up part numbers for Lexus or do you have to research first?

For non-critical items like wipers, filters and bulbs, I'd go to Autozone, Costco or use Amazon. I'm also wondering if Toyota parts number matches up for Lexus like brake parts.

A bit off topic but I called a Toyota dealer and I asked if they worked on Lexus. (didn't tell them what the work was) and they told me they don't work on Lexus because they already get soo many Toyotas. Maybe the person was new or mis-informed? I've never heard of a dealer turning down customers.

I took my old Lexus (2003 ES 300) to the Toyota dealer in Raleigh primary because they were closer but they were also much cheaper. I took my 2013 to a Toyota dealer in Atlanta and they said that the model was so new that they didn't have any experience working on it and refused. That was early 2013.

Question:

I have a 30000 mile service coming up soon on my 2013 ES. Can I have it done at the Toyota dealer.? Its $500 at the Lexus dealer.

If they have the parts, I see why not. For a major service, the price doesn't seen too bad.

I've been using the local Toyota dealer for service on my Lexus vehicles since I bought my first Lexus in 2005. Prices for maintenance are generally about half what the Lexus dealer charges. For example, an oil change for my ES with the same full synthetic oil and filter that the Lexus dealer uses costs $52 at the Toyota dealer.

I've also found that repairs are much less expensive at the Toyota dealer. A few years ago, I had a leak in the air conditioning line on my GX. The Lexus dealer wanted to replace the entire line at a cost of $1800. The Toyota dealer quoted me $800 for the same repair, but they suggested that the entire line didn't need to be replaced, and they thought that just replacing a fitting would do the job. They replaced that fitting for about $200, and doing so took care of the problem.

Except for warranty repairs, which have to be done at the Lexus dealer, I'll choose to use the Toyota dealer for everything else. They can do everything that the Lexus dealer can do. They do it at much lower cost, and the only difference in the level of service has been that I get a Toyota loaner and not a Lexus loaner to use while they are doing the work.
