I have always thought that the doors sounded cheap when closing them. They make a hollow, almost popping sound, like thin sheet metal flexing. 2013 es350.

I totally disagree with the "flimsy" and "cheap" statement. I traded an '06 Avalon for my 13 350 and found, as I did on the Avalon, that the doors are solid, high quality, open and close with ease, and give a solid "thunk" when completely shut. I'm not a Toyota cheerleader but think that my car is well built and of superior quality.

Do what Lesz said: open a window a bit and visually check the action.

i agree that it is a well- built machine, and I am happy with it, but definitely notice how thin the sheet metal is throughout the car. I imagine it is just how cars are built these days. The door actually sounds worse with the window down, due to rattle/glass vibration.

I've been involved in some research group to evaluate different vehicles. I would say Toyota/Lexus has a good solid feel on its doors compare to other vehicles. Honda/Acura, Audi is even worst on this category.

The best one I've seen is Cadillac CTS. Even with the window rolled down, slam that door, the sound is just the same as with the windows closed. It is solid. I failed the Tesla doors.

Most new cars are using thinner sheet metal or even exotic materials to reduce weight for gas saving and performance. Even my GS400 got a "soft" fender dent from someone leaning on it .
