i've read that u should aim for sales price 11-13% less than MSRP.
Sales tax is his area is 7%
Assume fees is 1%
At 11%, it's $42,450 OTD. At 13%, its $41,500 OTD., at 9% its $43,400.
If u email a few dealerships in area with the $41,500, few would respond. Email them with a solid number like $42,000 OTD and that will give them some wiggle room. I predict that for such a lexus, it will be around $43,500 OTD.
Since it is almost end of the month, now is best time to get the car. If you're afraid that $42,000 OTD is too low for them, say $42,500 OTD. Say that that number is your target price and that if that can be met, u'll buy.

You have to be realistic with your numbers. Absent any incentive cash on the car, the best they can do is Invoice less holdback, and they are going to make something. Holdback is 2% of the base MSRP, so about $750. $6,000 off on this car is not going to be possible without a sizable incentive, which I don't believe exists.
When you are realistic dealers know you're serious and will be more willing to deal. People tell stories about giving crazy offers and then they're all pissed off because the dealer never responds. The dealer doesn't take them seriously.

So offer 40K to buy, and then walk away? If so, sounds like a plan.

Lex - 13% off msrp is almost $6000 - I'm not sure many buyers, if any, have achieved that deep of discount on this car yet. Be that as it may, serious buyers should establish an email relationship with as many Internet Managers as they can - you will find out very quickly, which dealers offer aggressive pricing. Focus on selling price and any dealer "documentation fees" - the amount for tax, title and license are pretty much fixed and with a little basic math, can be calculated by you - no need to add any more confusion than is necessary - that's exactly what the dealer wants - a confused buyer.

Yah you can't compare a CA deal to a deal anywhere else.

Lex - sounds like you got an amazing deal - did you end up getting that nebula gray without nav that you originally looked at? What dealer did you end up with? The deals here in CA are really competitive but our taxes and DMV fees suck.
Take care,

Here in southern California there are over 10 Lexus dealerships within 50 miles of where I live. I used Consumer Reports buying service to get cost data on my exact model and what recent selling prices were in my in geographic area. Also used it for Internet quotes, and got two quotes that were better than 13% off list. The downside was that both dealerships were about 25 miles away.
I wanted to use a nearby dealer and hadn't gone in there earlier (on purpose). When I went in to buy, I had comptitive quotes in hand which I showed him after 30 minutes of dancing with the general sales manager to find the lowest price he would give me.
Since it was higher than the quotes I simply told him if he didn't beat the price I would buy elsewhere and showed him a couple of emails I had gotten from the other dealers. (He did beat the best quote by $100 and threw in a couple of other services such as car washing and free airport parking.
Obviously without competitive quotes I couldn't have done this.

I think you are spot on with that- you have to get competitive quotes in your area and beat the best one as you negotiate.
