We are taking a road trip with our puppy. Anyone have any recommendations on what kind of cover to put over the back seat to protect it?

You really should consider crating the dog for your trip.

A puppy will want to chew on anything you put back there with it.

Its a 10 hour car ride. I'm figuring that we have to stop every 2 hours or so to let him out... Do you think he'd be fine being crated the whole time while in the car?

Stopping regularly should suffice. A small dog will not harm your car. A crate may be excessive. A comfy blanket on the seat might be nice for your puppy.

The blanket on the back seat is not the answer. The puppy will want to migrate where the action is. That is up front where you are. A puppy is not a well behaved and trusted animal.

Leaving a puppy un-tethered is not only unsafe for the driver, but a hazard for the dog. A panic stop can cause injury to your pet.

Puppies have a tendency urinate whenever they feel the urge to do so. Get some urine in the perforations of the seat cushion and it will be really nice getting in the car on a hot summer day.

Do yourself and the puppy a favor and get a soft sided carrier for the trip. A soft blanket and a toy is all that it needs. No water or food in the carrier.

Yes... pretty much. Hasn't gone in the house in a couple of weeks. He runs to the door and whines to go out and take care of business.

I had Canvas Back custom make one. Three dogs weight from 19 lbs, to 60 lbs. Dirt,grass,mud, sand, works great. Width of seat bottom should be couple of inches longer but overall very satisfied.

I have to agree with crating the puppy. In addition to the safety inside the car, there is the other issue when a door is opened. I don't think you want to spend your time looking for him after he darts out of the car far from home. If you do not use a crate, at the very least get him microchipped before you go.

A crate is not necessarily a safe place for a dog to be in the car. There are many dog car safety seats available that are a lot safer than a crate.

FWIW, my dog generally sits on my lap.

I would absolutely love to have a Golden Retriever.....some day.....but not in my new Lexus. That is what the SUV Jeep is for, more room, safer for all, happy dog can't hurt anything.

Or a dog harness that is secured to the seat belt in the car. BTW, there are a few states where driving with a dog in your lap is a ticketable offense with New Jersey being the strictest. The penalty includes a hefty fine and possible jail time. It's just a matter of time before the rest of the states adopt a similar stance.

Have you travelled with a dog before? I will echo what others have said about travelling with a pup vs an adult dog. Our Dog is just content to lay down on the rear seat, but she was...ahem...not content...to do that when she was a puppy. I too think the puppy will be happier in a crate, and I think you guys will be too.

I would still get a good seat protector for the rear, something like this:
