Why didn't Avalon and ES just switch badges ?

I've always had two (or 3) cars simultaneously. Of those vehicles, the most miles I had on any was about 150,000 on a Toyota Tacoma. The least was about 60,000 miles on a 4 Runner. Even though, the 4 Runner was a great vehicle, I only kept it for about 3 years. I had the Tacoma for about 7 years, and the Lexus GX that I still own is going on 9 years.

13 Avalon vs ES
I've also driven both the Limited and ES, and find the ES a bit more comfortable, quiet and smooth. Yes the Toyota will have more features for the same $$. Matter of balance and choice.

If the ES had the body of the avalon but the badging/craftmanship/quality as lexus it would have sold even more IMO
which seems to be the overall point of the OP obviously so i would have to agree a more "LEXUS" avalon would have been a great ES

I would have bought outside of Lexus if the '13 ES Looked like the Avalon. The front end is too polarizing and the side silhouette of the greenhouse creates a station wagon shape... also note that the rear C-pillar window broken up and not part of the door (something Lexus has never done in any of its sedans).
if they only had an avalon wagon...a guy can dream! ha

IMO I don't want to use a service department. I bought the Lexus brand because I wanted a car with a quality standard that exceeds all others and does not require service (other than regular maintenance).
I had a 2009 Avalon. Never had one warranty service issue. Bought a 2013 ES300h. With 1500 miles the BSM went out and required replacement.
While I think the $5K difference was worth getting the Lexus, with the addition of so many technical systems to cars today, the probability of something going wrong is tremendously increased. Was very disappointed that a Lexus would not be fully operational without a system breakdown for many years/miles.

In their Road Tests Consumer Reports rates the ES and Avalon pretty close. I've always thought that it's just a matter of personal choice between the two.

i went with the lexus mainly because it is assembled in japan. i realize many cars are assembled outside of the company's country of origin, but this is something that is important to me. also, and i have no way of proving this at the moment, but i believe that the luxury trims use a better grade of materials/components i.e. better paint job, leather, trim pieces, buttons, etc. all the little stuff that matters to the luxury buyer.
look at the avalon's front fascia - it looks really cheap compared to the louvers on the ES. ditto for the interior.
