Default Blind spot info system question

Hi All,

I am trying to understand why the BSI system only functions when the vehicle is moving in certain speed? Why wouldn't it be functioning even the vehicle in stationary mode? I think this inconsistent behavior could confuse the driver.

you don't really care if you're at a stop light and someone is sitting in your blind spot. What you do care about is cars creeping up on your sides while driving down the highway at night with their headlights off because dumb people do that.

Yes, it is always on if you turn it on.

It also comes in handy when backing out of a parking spot, next to a large truck, and someone is barreling down the aisle.

And also when someone is walking behind the car. It has saved me more than once when backing out of a spot with an SUV on both sides and some idiot walks behind my moving car.

There are some times when I would think it should register something in my blind spot when it doesn't, I suspect that you may be experiencing this when you're stopped...

To the system's credit, I've always been aware of the other car, so perhaps if I am aware of it the system isn't supposed to register it...

greengil, the Blind Spot Monitor does not actively warn you if you are at a stop. The BSM on the ES comes with Rear Cross-Traffic alert (which is not available on the current GS's BSM system). This maybe your source of confusion since this mode only comes on if the gearshift is set to Reverse, and there is cross traffic-- you will receive audio and visual alerts whether or not your car is at a standstill.

Question on BSM.

Do you need to turn on BSM (engage the switch on the dash) every time you start the car? What if you have BSM turned off, then turn off the car. Next time you turn on the car, is BSM off or on? Thanks

Nope. Once its on, it stays on until you turn it off. If you turn it off, it stays off.

I have to say that of all the features on my car, the BSM is probably the best one on there for me... I've had this car about 6 or 7 months and I can't tell you how many times it's helped me out....especially when visibility is blocked when you're parked between two other cars and trying to back out --- and somebody is driving down the isle..... yeah, it's helped me out a few times...

BSM works above 15 mph and Cross Traffic Alert works while in reverse.
The 2013 GS's with BSM did not have Cross Traffic but the 2014's now do.

Not sure of your BSM minimum mph to activate info. I've seen my blind side indicator on while crawling in bumper to bumper when I was doing between 5-7 mph.

Page 322, turns out to be 10 mph (16 kph) not 15 mph...
