It will be a regulation before too long that a cell phone will be disabled if it is in motion. The whole text and cell phone use in a moving vehicle will follow the seatbelt path and auto manufactures will have no choice in the matter.

They said they do it with a flash drive, so it must be a software update.

I called complained got a specialist to call me back and guess what the answer was. Buy a 2014! I just purchased my first lexus two weeks ago and even my mothers Hyundai has the ability to mute the damn GPS when on a call this is pretty bad indeed. No firmware no nothing... I am going back to BMW's and Mercedes ... A shame too because I liked the lexus aside from this major problem that I cant live with since I practically work out of my car!

Seems like a drastic (and costly) measure but good luck with whatever you choose.

Yeah, this story sounds believable.

The specialist who called me back after I spoke with the initial customer support person told me that they know about this problem and it will be addressed in the next generation of the rx 350 so I assumed that to be the 2014 so in essence yes the answer was to buy a 2014. I specifically asked about firmware fix and he replied in the negative. I would be happy to post my email from nexus support with ticket ID for all you non believers!

Good news is and I can say for certain if this is true but I have heard rumor that there is an aftermarket third party Asian hack they addresses this specific issue since it is obvious a very very very bad design. I just say shame on Lexus for not addressing this instantly with firmware as soon as they verified the bug / design flaw / technical oversight. Call it what you will but to many people that work out of their cars this is a no buy decision in the future. Lexus lost a fleet of rx 350 purchases for my engineers based on this issue because like I said I love the car other than this one major design flaw. Currently I have mounted a Garmin on my dashboard to bypass this issue so much for the 2k upgrade for navi... Worst part is the only reason I got the navigation was due to the mark levinson upgrade which wasn't available without the navigation option as i am perfectly fine with a good aftermarket gps like a Garmin nuvi so unless they really jammed enform into a matrix of softwarebloops this was another shady tactic if you ask me.

Is having voice navigation that vital to you? Why not just deactivate the navigation voice prompts?!? If you want them to be muted when you are on the phone you obviously don't need them anyways.

I never turn the voice prompts on, I find them annoying. It popping up on the screen and telling me what to do is fine.

I don't understand how sticking a garmin on the dash solves this issue when muting the navigation prompts when on the phone does not.

Default The 2014 ES Hybrids have the same problem!

Being an owner of BMW and a Mercedes i just bought my first Lexus. I drive long distances and I am always on the phone.

Everyone I talked to asked if I could turn my GPS down. I have never had this issue in other cars. This is quite a problem but good to see that I am not alone.

I will be contacting Lexus soon.

So far only thing that i was told by lexus was to lower the volume manually every time I am on a call. Thats pretty lame for a 47K based car!

If anyone can suggest a fix please do so.

The navigation sucks in multiple ways -- Not only does it not mute the stereo, and does not respect the phone conversation, but it also does not find the best routes.

There are a couple of places near here where this navigator tells me to make four left-turns (completely around a block) before going straight on the road that I was originally on. That might be funny if the road wasn't a 4-lane highway where it is extremely difficult to make a left turn.

I use the Toyota/Lexus navigator only occasionally, when I don't have a Garmin unit handy. For any serious navigation, where I really don't know where I am going, I use a portable Garmin.

This is not the quality of Navigation systems that I expected when I bought my Lexus. I too have experienced false turns and circling freeway exits on and off. I use MapQuest or my wife's Garmin when needed. Adding to the disappointment is that Lexus charges you $$$ to speak to a LIVE person for directions when you need help...

I've had Lexus nav in 4 different Lexus vehicles over the past 10 years. I've never had false turns or circling freeway exits on and on, or any of this stuff....

Lucky you... I didn't have any of it in my '06 Avalon either.

Its essentially the same system as what was in your Avalon. The basic system in my 2013 GS (same as whats in the ES) is the same as what was in my 2003 ES. Are you sure that you have the right sort of route preferences set? Have you adjusted speed limits for certain types of roads or anything like that?
