Approx 3 gallons based on three fills so far. Miles to empty is around 45 when my light comes on. I filled up a couple miles later with 14 gallons. It has a 17 gallon tank.

Caution. The ES300h may use a bladder in the tank. I found this out the hard way in 2005 with my then Prius. 14 miles after the light came on I was out of gas. The bladder can make life unpredictable.

Default Fourth fill-up on ES300h

"Only" 40.8 MPG on this tank I did 580.8 miles before putting in 14.25 gallons of regular gas. All but a couple miles were done in ECO mode.

Cruising range after this fill up was 658 miles.

Forgot to mention. WA gas has 10% Ethanol. When you get to the 40 MPGs that makes a difference.

I'm thinking normal driving without paying attention to what the car is doing would yield 35 to 37 MPG.

So I tried to push the ES a little bit on the gas fill up, got a little paranoid seeing the needle pass the empty line. Fill up was 15.1 gallon @ 623 miles. One quick question, on the average after mpg after fuel up and average MPG display. Even if i reset the average MPG right after I fill up the average MPG in both displays will always show a different number. Anyone know the reason for the discrepancy?

Got 34.1 MPG on the first tank. 13.7 Gallons and got 466 miles. Mostly city driving on very hilly road.

Default Mileage

I have about 1200 miles. Have had pretty big range on mpg. Overall getting 34-36 with lots of big city driving. Filled up to reset mpg and went around 35 miles at 45 mph (speed limit) on flat stretch hitting very few stop lights and had around 6 stop signs. MPG was 48. HOWEVER, when doing lots of city stop and start with some highway miles the mpg drops to 34 to 38. I notice when I watch the real time mpg indicator on the dash display going 45 to 60 in ECO Mode with needle in ECO range the range with foot steady on gas, stays just below 40 (around 35-38) and goes over 40 to "infinity" only when getting off the gas completely. I had an HS250h for 3 years and was able to pretty easily get 32-34mpg which was as advertised even without lots of highway miles. I think it is going to be difficult to average around 40mpg even with hybrid tricks. I'm pretty sure I will get that on trips, but not so sure on "local driving" even with part on freeways. I think the mpg Lexus lists for ES300h may be overly aggressive in normal driving in city conditions. I know the cars have onlly been out for a short time, but very interested in other's experiences around the city.

Default Break-in

What's a suitable break-in period? 5 Thousand miles? FE should improve by then I would hope.
I'm waiting on a 300esh which I've been told could take 3 months.

I am getting 38.5 + - on the original tank of gas (about 225 miles thus far). I have read in the past that you need to go at least a few thousand miles to break in the engine. EPA has become conservative with their MPG tests over the past few years (suppose to be more realisitc) - with that said, I fully expect this car will get in the low 40s - as long as you're not carrying an extra 500 lbs and you take it gently with the gas peddle from a stop.

Default Milage

I'm getting about 40.5 +/-, with about 270 miles on the odo, driving mixed city/highways, but taking it easy on the eco mode. Still driving it granny style while breaking this in.

I hear that they don't change the synthetic oil 0-20wt until 10K. So, breakin period isn't before the oil change on this vehicle.

Filled up yesterday, the average was 44.3 mpg I have about 1200 miles on the odometer. I noticed that you also get better MPG if you have the A/C off vs. on like a +1-2MPG improvement. The optimal way to get the best MPG for me is during rush hour traffic where there could be spans of highway driving with lighter traffic to recharge the battery and then stop and go traffic under 25mph and deplete the battery and then repeat with spans of lighter traffic to recharge and then stop and go. My route repeats this process on average about 4 times each way and with no A/C this morning I have recorded the best MPG to date at 51.3 MPG driven over a 21.3 miles distance.

Default How did lexus determine gas mileage?

I am new to the hybrid scene. I just received my es 300h loaded. It has 130 miles. I have driven the car back and from work. mostly in the city. I drive in the right lane and i drive slow enough( the speed limit) that people are passing me. I keep the car in the eco mode and drive slow up to the stop lights without stopping at times. My commute is all flat land. I am only getting 31 mpg. I am wondering how did lexus come up with a mpg of 40 mpg? And when the company did their testing and reporting of the gas mileage what were conditions. Is the driving environment standard for all companies when reporting gas mileage. Meaning are they driving in the plains or rocky mountains. I am new to the hybrid world. I drive the car like i normally drive. I figured i would get way better than the reported 40 mpg. What sre the standards a company has to meet prior to reporting gas mile? Is 40 mpg achieved after the 10,000 mile mark. Help me!

"I am wondering how did lexus come up with a mpg of 40 mpg?" Lexus did not, the EPA did.

"I drive the car like i normally drive. I figured i would get way better than the reported 40 mpg" You may need to drive your car a little bit differently than you are now to improve your fuel economy, especially to exceed 40mpg

you probably might never see 40mpg until next summer (winter climate takes a heavy toll on battery capacity and ICE efficiency)
