Default I tried...

I used WD40, but there's not much as far as moving parts in there. I'll mess with it more when I get off work. Nothing really moved when I stuck my finger in and tried to move the lock latch thing. I wish I were more mechanically inclined. I have the interest but not the wherewithall. No word back from the service manager yet at Lexus.

As this does not appear to be an electrical issue then it sounds like the lock assembly (in the trunk lid), or the latch (striker) may have been "jarred" out of position (when you "slammed" it closed?) and is out of rig/adjustment. Maybe the mounting screws/bolts were not as tight as they should have been. The first thing (because it's easy) would be to check the latch mounting bolts for being tight. You can clearly see the two, hex headed bolts and the latch through the cutout in the plastic trunk finisher.

Default Things are looking up...I hope!

So I did speak with the manager of the service department. He wasn't very happy with my story. He asked me to bring the car back in and they'd put me in a loaner and figure out what was up with my trunk. I took it in yesterday and within a half hour they called to tell me it's a faulty latch and they are waiving the labor and only charging for the part. $180 and out the door. (Would have cost $520 plus tax). I'll pick it up later on today. Meanwhile the loaner is 2015 ES350 and it's SOOOO awesome. Just not as awesome of my 2008 which is paid for.

Talking Thank you to you all for your advice and patience.

I wish I'd of noticed your post Grumpy, because maybe I could have checked those bolts to see if they were loose. Lexus says the latch was broken, but hey, they couldn't even get in the trunk and this granny did, with your easy instructions (once I figured out what AFT meant it was a done deal). Now I'm moving on to figure out why my fog lites started smoking and the covers melted. I'm guessing someone put bulbs in that were too powerful? Anyway, I need to figure out why and buy new covers for them. They're brown and a little misshapen now, even tho they still work I'm scared to keep them on.

Have a nice weekend everyone!!! Seattle is SUNNY!

The fogs are melting because someone probably put in HID lights (high intensity discharge). They have a higher heat output than regular halogen bulbs. Not out of the ordinary.

AFAIK they have lower heat output. I have HIDs too and no problems.
