Just under 2 months ago I had my spark plugs changed. I had skipped this option (expense) at the 60K service and had it completed a bit later.. around 67K. Now two months later I have 4 different warning lights come on in the dash. Dealer ran the code which shows up as "multiple misfires". After a day of diagnostics I am told it's the ignition coil.. Odd. I am also told if there was any relation to the previous work, it would have appeared almost immediately, two months ago.

So.. what are the odds of the ignition coil failing, at ~68k miles, just two months after I had my spark plugs changed? Not looking forward to *another* $600 bill for essentially the same work I just paid for.

Coils going bad on these cars are very common. If you remove your engine cover you will see the coils are round. The new style are square. I recommend replacing all six now to avoid the headaches or returning for the others when they go bad.

Curious... Does Lexus put the square from the factory now? When did they start?

Yeah, it's possible for the coil to go out after new spark plugs.

But! I wouldn't replace all of them, if anything keep a spare with you. Just because one failed doesn't mean all of them will.

If the bad coil is one of the front ones, you can easily change it yourself in 5 minutes. Just google for the instructions. Buy an OEM ignition coil from Toyota (it's the same part number used by Lexus). Don't mess around with a generic brand.

Hmm. It's coil 3 apparently. Not sure if that's one of the front ones or not.. will have to do some research. $550 to replace one or $1300 to replace them all. Guess I have until Monday now to decide. Thanks for the replies.

Coil 3 is the middle one in the back bank, unfortunately.

I have not changed any coils in the back bank, but I have read that it's significantly more work to replace.

to the O.P i am confused you say the spark plugs at the 60k service ?
i didn't think that we needed to do plugs at 60k i thought these where good for longer than 60k.
Do i have this wrong.

do i need to do them now if i have 85k on the 07 ?

Spark plugs are recommended at 60K service, though you can push them longer. I would say you are due at 90k at least.

Nice. Maybe I'll ask dealer to change out 1,3, and 5 for now and if I have any more problems with the others, I can do those myself.

I am not sure where you are getting your info from i just looked up on Lexus Drivers website under scheduled maintance stuff like that.
and it is saying 120k
i went back and looked at 60k also nothing their
the only time it calls for Sparplus is at 120 so i am wondering why you did yours so soon ?

if your looking at the link that you posted last you do realize that is from 2003 and you are talking about a car 07 or newer right ?

My 2007 ES350 got error P0351, few months ago and it refers to rear coil, to replace rear one is time consuming, mostly labour. So replace all 3 at the back, kept 2 that were not bad just incase any front one goes. Since the garage was replacing the rear I took the opportunity and replaced all new plugs and new gaskets, The garage said the plugs dont need replacing but since I was only paying for parts, replaced all 6.
The total cost, parts & labour was $810.00 (Cdn). Try getting a quote from another garage, I think each coil is $90.
