Default Alternator 2007 ES350

Hey guys, the battery light in my 2007 ES350 just came on today. The car still cranks and drives for now.... I don't think it's the battery because that was replaced 3 months ago. Dealer says it's the alternator and wants to charge $1200 to fix.... I see replacement alternators online for MUCH cheaper. I want to buy the replacement part and fix it myself but I am no mechanic. Could someone please direct me to a DIY tutorial? Or, cheaper alternatives than $1200? Thank you

I just checked the Service Manual and it shows having to remove the entire front end of the car, bumper included, to change this part. If you're no mechanic (I'm not, either) I would suggest you find a local indy shop for something like this. Good luck!

I guess ill chime in.
I researched this a bit when I was looking to add a high output alternator for the 07.

Your best chance is to look for one of the models of toyota that also have a 2grfe (camry, avalon, rav4, highlander, etc) and look for a diagram or diy that way.
In my search I remember seeing one where removing the radiator was unnecessary. I wish I still had the link but I've since gone through multiple laptops. So you'll have to use your googlefu skills.

If you're looking for an alternative to the high price of the alternator you can try a re-manufactured, although I would stick with a denso unit (oem manufacturer)

Default Replacing 2007 ES 350 alternator

I just replaced my 2007 ES 350 alternator. Got a Remy unit which will be about $120 after core return. The main issues with the replacement are:
1) cramped space especially on the passenger side around the pulleys. Small hands are helpful. Expect bruised knuckles and scrapped arms.
2) bizarre 3 bolt system holding alternator on- it is best to remove the heat shield from the exhaust manifold and move it over a bit to access the deep bolt holding the alternator bracket to the block. The 3rd bolt of the alternator connected to this bracket is impossible to access directly- you need to unbolt the bracket in addition to the top/front bolt and deep 2nd bolt ( passenger side) in order to remove / replace the alternator. Remember to push the tensioner backward to loosen the serpentine belt and remove it from the alternator pulley. No need to take it completely out unless you really want to replace it.
3) need to remove a) bolts holding metal frame over the radiator b) bolt holding engine oil dipstick to block and c) (likely) plastic press in fastners holding grill to metal frame so you can have an assistant pull the radiator forward to allow room to wiggle the alternator out. It is a tight fit but you do not have to remove the radiator or bumper- just removal of bolts to allow flexibility to move forward.

This alternator is definitely more difficult to replace but doable in a couple of hours. The lack of space all around requires patience but will result in substantial savings. It would be best to have someone who has done at least one alternator in the past with you.
