Default The great purchase debate

I tend to switch cars every 2-3 years, and I'm getting the itch again.

I currently have a 2007 ES350 with 58,000 miles, NAV, heated/ventilated seats, new (about 6k on them) $800 tires and new battery. Great condition, no dents, dings, cosmetic or mechanical issues.

I've looked at 2 different 2009's and can't decide which to get. Looking for pros and cons since they are essentially the same care. I hate dealing with dealers, but here's what I'm looking at:

Dealer #1:
2009 ES 350, with nav, black on black.
22,000 miles
Asking $25,000, says they won't budge
Offering me $13,000 trade for my 2007 Said that's the best they can do.

Dealer #2
2009 ES 350, with nav, red on tan.
35,700 miles
Asking $24,400
Offering me $14,000 trade for my 2007
This car has a weird smell in it that I can't identify, and there is a minor scrape in the leather on the drivers door. The dealer wouldn't discuss my trade or sale price until I make a formal offer. But it sounds like there is room to negotiate.

The cars both appear to have identical features, only #2 also has a rear sunshade.
I like red cars better, but the miles are lower on #1.

The trade values were lower than I was expecting, and when I gave them the KBB, NADA, and Edmunds values, they said they don't really go buy that. (pretty funny since they DO go by NADA when setting the price on their cars.

Anyway, if you were me, what would you do?

I'd say that the 13,700 miles additional on the second car should have no meaning whatsoever in your decision. That's a very small difference on a car that will last ten times that long without even trying.

Dealers that won't negotiate should be avoided. There is always room for a lower price while maintaining a decent profit.

If I were you I'd go with the car I liked better. Feel free to walk and wait for a better ES to come along. After all, you will be the one driving it for years to come. Get what you like.

I agree. Even though mechanically the 2010 is the same, they made some nice interior and exterior changes with the refresh. The nav is hard drive based too.

How do I tell the early 2010's from the updated ones?

I'm confused as to why you would trade your 2007 on the virtually identical 2009...I agree with Joe...at least get the refreshed 2010.

How do I tell the early 2010's from the updated ones?
As I posted in your other thread, this doesn't make any sense...

All 2010s are the same...

You guys make good points - I was just going to switch cars for one with lower miles. I've got a few little quirks with mine, just wanted to part ways before things get expensive.

As for the 2010's, I'm still waiting for to prices to come down. Most with nav around here are still in the 28-30k range, and I didn't really want to spend over 25k.

That just doesn't make any sense. At 58k miles yours is still very young. To incur the cost of swapping just to get one that has 20-30k fewer miles doesn't make any sense, 20-30k miles on one of these cars is nothing.

wait till there last few days of the busienss month for them then go in
make them a last and final offer if they don't take what you think is fear then walk
see what happens i always find the last 2 days of the month for a dealers business month is the best days when the sales rep has the most room to negotiate also

if they don't want to budge walk sit down set up a deal with the dealer wait untill just before you sign the pappers and tell them look we both have put time into this i really want this but i don;'t think your giving me enought for my car i want more

That sounds crazy expensive to me. Brand new base MSRP on a 2013 is only $36,370.

Add in finding a $36K base '13 ES350 would be tough as there is only one nationwide (San Rafael, CA ) on Autotrader.com.

they figured if you want base you will order it they will then have it built for you delivery it in a month or 2 from order date and hope you don't want to wait that long so they can then sell you a more exspensive of the same model right there and then
because lets face it
how many pepole go to a dealer because they want to or can wait 2 or 3 months for a car
and how many go becuase they want something right then and there
