Default Headlamps

I want to replace the headlamp assemblies. Lexus dealer is smoking crack as they want close to $3000.00 for new HID ones. The only difference I see between them and regular halogen is the HID comes with the ballast attached to it. Has anyone changed the headlamps from HID to stock hallogen (as they are only $100 a piece brand new)? I am thinking of doing this, then just buying a HID conversion kit for the halogen bulbs to change it back to HID. I already changed the DRL and fog lights to HID, another switch would be just as easy. I could care less if the bulbs self level and turn like it does now with the HID bulbs. That is just another small motor waiting to break.

I'm confused, it almost sounds like you have HIDs now and want to buy new HID housings?!? Why would you want to do that?

I highly doubt anyone would have gone from OEM HIDs to Halogen...

Anyways, at Sewell the OEM Halogen assemblies are $387.28 each, the HID assemblies are $1,032.77. The HID assemblies come with the ballast, as well as the motors and mechanisms for the AFS and auto-leveling.

I have HID now. The assemblies are yellow, dull and leak. I want whole new assemblies, but it insane to pay $1000.00 for each of them. The halogen assemblies are much cheaper, and look exactly the same. They just don't have the ballasts and the self leveling motors.

Question was, can you replace the HID with the halogen assemblies, then just convert the halogen bulbs to HID with a conversion kit. I would save over $1000.00 doing this, and would have brand new assemblies on the front of the car with HID light coming out of them.

Have you tried polishing down the original assemblies? You can sand & polish them then re-coat them in clearcoat to restore their appearance. You can run a little bead of sealant around them too.

The halogen assemblies are much cheaper, and look exactly the same. They just don't have the ballasts and the self leveling motors.
They look the same, but they aren't the same. In order to convert from HID to Halogen and then back to HID with a retrofit kit you need to shell out $400 each for the halogen assemblies, then purchase a retrofit kit, never mind the fact that your harness is for HID, do you have to convert that back? This would still run you $1,000 easy, and you loose the projectors that are optimized for HID, and the auto-leveling which is a safety feature IMHO. In short...you will reduce the effectiveness of your headlights.

I think the solution is to try and restore the lights you've got.
