Most likely a valve body problem due to old worn out dirty fluid and lots of miles. A fluid change may help and is a relatively small investment.
Or if that does not work or is not possible,
Try to find a used transmission, then if you do find one, be sure to change the fluid during installation.
Or shop for another vehicle and sell yours for junk.

I loved the way my 2008 ES drove on the highway, the engine power, and the quality and fit and finish of the materials and build. What I didn't like was the loud engine that made all kinds of noises, sounded like a race car, and the transmission. The earlier ES engines were soo quiet that you couldn't hear it running. I might look to get another Lexus, but if it has these kinds of problems, might as well get a Benz.

Mine had that problem after it was purchased 15 years ago. The shift solednoid for reverse was replaced.
Please scan it for the OBD codes.

I’m having the same issue with my es350 2007 model.
I just changed the transmission valve body and I noticed that when I drive for a while then shift the gear selection into the reverse it will refused to reverse until I park the car, turn it off and allow it to cool for a while then turn it on again and put it into the reverse it will then move. So I want to know what the issue is, can you also tell me which of the solenoid it’s got the reverse so it can be changed. Please I will be looking forward to a quick response. This issue is causing me a lot especially financially.
