Used ES350 or used LS460?
I've read a few previous threads, but nothing definitive. Can folks who have driven both give me an honest opinion as to whether the LS460 is noticeably nicer than the ES350 without giving points for status?
Some of the reasons I'm considering a used ES instead of the LS is it is slightly smaller, would probably be a little cheaper to maintain, and can be had for about $14,000 less.
I've never cared much about status symbols, so that aspect isn't a factor for me at all. Why I'm considering the LS is that if it really is miles nicer, I can buy one used for just $14,000 more, and it should have about the same depreciation in actual dollars. Buying a $75,000 car for $30,000 may be a good deal, but only if it was actually worth the $75,000 to begin with for reasons other than status.
Any thoughts? Are the seats really softer/sun really brighter/sky really bluer in the LS, or should I just get the ES?

Is gas mileage a concern for you? The ES will be much more friendly on the gas bill.
Both vehicles are nice, the LS outshines the ES when it comes to rear passenger comfort - you can purchase an LS with the rear audio & heated seats package that is not available with any ES.

It isn't much of a concern, as I live 3 miles from work and most other things I do, and will keep a hybrid for longer journeys. Either way, I think the ES and LS have similar fuel efficiency, don't they?

16/23/18 mpg (city/ hwy/ combined)
ES will get:
19/28/22 mpg (city/ hwy/ combined)
So that's 18mpg combined vs. 28 mpg combined (not similar fuel efficiency by a large margin). Like garsarno stated, you can easily get around 30mpg with the ES. I've gotten 33mpg on long trips with hwy driving.

IMO the used ES/LS comparison is almost apples and oranges. If you were comparing a new ES to a high mileage LS it MIGHT be different, but even then I doubt it. In the end it comes down to a personal decision based on all of your criteria. It is your $$'s after all.

I think if you choose the ES, you will always wonder / compare how the LS might have been in comparison. If you choose the LS, then I think you won't even think about the comparison anymore.

GS350 is cramped in the back seats.. the difference between. the current gen of ES And LS has been narrowed down.. I have heard LS models has quite a few kinks to iron out. so getting an older one 2007-8. may not be a good idea.. i wud get a ultra ES350

I can also tell you with some authority that an LS is well over twice as expensive to own as an ES not counting acquisition cost and depreciation. I'm counting only repairs, regular maintenance, fuel, insurance, tires and property taxes.
And if you drive in snow, you can usually get by with all season tires on an ES. I wouldn't dream of doing that on an LS -- I've bought an extra set of wheels and snow tires for each LS I've owned.

I agree with Kansas about the LS being twice as expensive to own and maintain. But the driving experience of the LS is NOT twice as smooth, or quiet or refined and the seats are NOT twice as comfortable. Thus the ES makes more sense for all but many buyers who desire Lexus refinement without the bank account busting consequences of LS ownership.
