I started my car up today and wanted to go somewhere and when i try to start up my car, it makes a click noise. i asked my friend whats the problem, he said i might have a dead alternator and this mechanic i know said something's wrong with the battery. I duno what to do but im tryin to get it fixed asap. when cables are plugged into my friends car and my car to the battery, it runs fine. but when i try to start it without the jumper cables, it doesnt work. anyone??

Sounds like a dead battery - perhaps a cell in it has gone bad. Since batteries and alternators work in conjunction it could be either or both that have gone bad.

Alternators are a hundred bucks or so at an auto parts store. You bring in your old one, they'll test it and swap it out if it's bad. The entire installation should take less than an hour.

Lexus will charge considerably more, of course.

It just sound like a dead battery to me. This could be caused by a lot of things including the recent hot weather as well as bad cables, a defective alternator, a bad starter. In my experience it's almost always the battery. You didn't mention how old the battery is. Most auto parts stores can check out the battery for you and will probably even replace it for you. Cost less than $100 and takes only a few minutes.

Default Careful...

You should never hook up jumper cables to your Lexus without first disconnecting the battery cables from your battery first. Then charge the battery with the jumper cables, and remove the jumper cables and reinstall your battery cables to start the car. ANY voltage spike or low voltage can instantly knock out several of the sensitive electronic components, which will result in a far greater cost to repair than either the battery and/or the alternator. BEWARE!
