Could have been a design change the last minute.... Notice in your Highlander there are 3 sets of hooks inside the seats. But the ES only has 2 sets, but they didnt eliminate the back hook. I know it is possible to install the seat in the middle using one hook from each side. I dont believe the distance is exactly the same... somewhat wider apart if you install it in the middle. The result is exactly the same though.

I raised the same concern to my salesman while I was waiting for my car to arrive. He also said they could not legally disable any safety features in the car, and assured me that the rear side airbags were designed and tested to protect passengers of all size.
