Based on numbers I'd believe a lot of people would go for M or GS over the ES but when you take the value into consideration... That's where the ES shines.
In addition let's not forget not everyone can take a RWD... Especially in areas where they get snow during the winter, lots of it... The FWD ES vs. AWD M/GS would have a bigger difference in price.

Another good point! Here in Jersey you would be screwed with RWD.
... oh, and warranty is a competitive thing just for side-to-side comparison When I asked my salesperson about extended warranty, he replied its a waste of money.

When I first saw the ES350 I thought it was the new GS. The sticker price for a car with such good looks took me aback -- it fit within my budget. The test drive sealed the deal, it is truly a luxury car. The head turning and compliments are unexpected gifts. Lexus' customer service reputation, name and resale value are icing on the cake.

When I took my ES 350 into the dealer to have warranty work performed the first week, the service tech said "Is that your GS right there?" I said, "No, that's my ES 350 right there"

I mean, do we measure people by 5% differences or two inch height differences?
The point: numbers don't matter if you don't like the car behind the wheel. Test drive it.

One of the real benefits of Lexus and Infiniti following different paths is to provide us a choice between 2 excellent car brands with different character to match our individual preferences. I couldn't decide so I have one of each.

Next time you're at a Lexus dealer, try an LS430 for size. Same interior room as an M35. These are really 2 vastly different cars. The GS is the direct competitor for the M, but falls far short in matching the interior room of the M.

The M35/45 does have IMO more space than the GS, its pretty obvious. And it should, its a huge car for its class, sitting 58" tall, taller than a LS or even 7 series! The GS is more coupe like in execution, a drivers oriented interior and smaller interior room, which many here are not fans of the fact interior room is basically the same as the 2GS. Sales though have been steady so I guess Lexus and Infiniti did a good job.
