I've read through the owner's manual and they really don't explain the difference between Average MPG and Tank MPG on the readout in the dash.

Does Tank MPG on the readout mean the miles per gallon since you last filled-up?

Does Average MPG on the readout mean the miles per gallon during your current drive?

Mine shows about 26MPG for the tank and about 23MPG "average."

So, I'm wondering if anyone else knows for sure what the distinction is.

"Tank MPG" is from the last fill up and cannot be manually reset.

"Average MPG" can be reset so you can tell your fuel mileage during that trip, or whenever you decide to reset it.

Thanks for the clarification. Here is an interesting fact:

I bought this car brand new and it only had a couple of miles on it.

I have never reset the Average MPG, so it has been tracking ever since the beginning. Yet, the Average MPG is about 3 MPG less than the Tank MPG.

The delta between the two has always been about 3 MPG. You would think that they would largely be the same.

Even though the Tank MPG resets each time I get a tank of gas, because I drive to the exact same places and generally in the same manner, I would think the two readings would be closer to one another.

The computer has many factors to deal with to come up with the readings on your display.

Stuff like, MPH, compensating for traffic signals(idling time), getting reading from the ECM, etc, etc.

I bet that if you took a trip,strictly highway driving, using the cruise control you probably would turn those numbers around, but it will take quite awhile to see these results.

P.S. If that doesn't work, call Bill Gates before he retires......maybe he has an answer. LOL

I had the same difference in my two readings through the first tank of gas. This seemed odd to me as well seeing as how it was the first tank. I reset the average reading at my first fill up and they tracked exactly the same across the second tank. Weird.

Has anybody else done the math to check tank mpg? Someone mentioned they thought it was a little high. The computer said I got 25.5 mpg on my last tank. I crunched the numbers on my calculator and came up with 24.8.

Your MPG rating goes down when your car is running and idle. Since the dealer runs the car for a few hours straight for it's pre-delivery check, the overall MPG rating is going to be lower than what you get driving it around.

I've noticed that resetting the MPG and driving a while can give you outrageous numbers for the first couple of miles, if you're on the streets iv'e sene it as low as 8 MPG and as high as 45 MPG on the freeway. It all eventually averages out to 24-25MPG in my car, Southern California stop-and-go traffic everywhere...
