Potential damage to engine

My girlfriend had her ES300 serviced at an independent shop. They forgot to put oil in the car, she drove it about 8 miles before the oil light came on steadily. We stopped, put 5 quarts of oil in it, and drove on home. I listened for but did not hear any rod knocking or piston slapping but am concerned about damage down the way. I figure those 8 miles were the equiv. of about 20,000 miles. What kind of other damage could have occurred? I'm concerned about the camshafts and really am starting to think that they should replace the engine.

What to do
Dave,
as soon as possible you should report the incident to your local DMV. They usually have a 30 day cut-off for complaints, I'd then try the better business bureau to see if those morons have been reported for that before. That is inexcusable. If you paid by credit card I'd even call them and dispute until you get satisfaction of some kind, warranty or whatever. Good Luck.
