Violent Jerk when coming to a stop
I have a 2004 Lexus ES330 with 148K miles. In the morning on my way to work, when coming to a stop my car will violently jerk when I am slowing down. It does it between 20 and 0 mph. There are no lights that come on. I then press the gas and it will jerk again and then kick into gear and continue on. The first jerk is very hard though and it is scarey. Feels like someone slammed into the back of me. Does anyone know what this could be?

Two other things:
1) There is an upper mount, too. It is called a "torque strut" aka dogbone mount, running from the front of the engine to the adjacent shock tower. It is usually the first to break. Aftermarket prices are substantially cheaper than dealer prices on this piece.
2) Change your ATF fluid if it has not been done on schedule. It will smooth the shifting, too.

Thank you all so much! I saw pictures of engines with broken mounts and it looks just like what my car is doing. I want to get it fixed before I get whiplash.

<insert paranoia>
But, every so often I run into a situation where a mechanic has damaged a car in such a way so that some time later it will need a repair and the customer will come back. So, my suggestion is that you take the car to another repair place if possible. Unless you are 100% sure that didn't happen, or have no other option.

... by every so often .. I mean about once every 5-6 years.

If you define "violent" shifting as a tad harsher than normal, disconnecting the battery during the alternator replacement would have reset the ECU causing idle to be high and shift points to be changed until it relearns your driving style.
Does the engine rock back and forth when going from R to D? If so its the engine mounts, although 148K is little young for the mounts to go that bad.
