What fluid specifically did you use?

Mobil 1 Full Syn ATF. The tranny did not like it at all. Switched back to Type 4 and all was well.

Well no wonder you had problems that fluid is not spec'd for T-IV.

Any damage done by using the wrong ATF? If so, what specific damage happened?

How many miles was the wrong ATF in there?

The reason I'm asking is that several years ago I had an ATF drain and refill at a very reputable transmission specialist, and after about 500 miles when I happened to look at the invoice I noticed that he used the wrong ATF. He used Dextron, instead of Toyota type T-IV

I immediately went back, and This time he drained and filled with the right ATF. I subsequently did 2 more drains and refills within about 2.000 miles, and all is still well. About to do another drain and Refill 7, 000 miles later.

I was lucky to have looked at the invoice. No harm done.

So which Synthetic ATF fluid is recommended?
And will it be ok for just drain and fill to mix with the existing Type 4 that's already in there?

I'm pretty sure its this
Amazon.com: Mobil 1 55221 3309 Automatic Transmission Fluid - 1 Quart (Pack of 12): Automotive Amazon.com: Mobil 1 55221 3309 Automatic Transmission Fluid - 1 Quart (Pack of 12): Automotive

This is Type IV for the U140E transmission.
I bought 12 quarts of this stuff when I did my tranny rebuild.

I would do a few drain and refills with the correct transmission fluid to try and get the wrong transmission fluid out of there.

If you have the A514 transmission, then you want Type III.

I now use the ATF that Lexus indicates. It is cheaper and it works fine.

I hope that meets your standard for an opinion.

As for the color of the fluid, I know the color of clean ATF and that ATF was not clean. Motor oil is "dirty" after 500 miles or so.
It's vaguely more helpful, but begrudgingly so. What car, what fluid, how long - these things matter and when stacked up against a large body of empirical evidence to the contrary, helpful to making the case.

If you've got a filthy engine with problems, your motor oil could be that dirty in 500 miles. But not in a well-running 1mz-fe like these have. Mine doesn't look like that after 7,500 miles (Mobil 1). If I used cheap oil, left it in that long, and drove in stop and go city traffic, it could look like that.
