After 1999 is when Lexus made the transisiton to the U series of transmissions, which weren't as reliable as the A-series it replaced in older versions. If you search on this forum you'll see a few people who have already had to rebuild their 2000-2001 ES300 tranny.

IMO, its still a stronger transmission than the one in the Acura TL.
