I'd get another quote. With a rebuild and a 2 year warranty, I only paid $2400 on my 2001, although my axles were ok. At least now you know for sure what I need, but call around and see if there is a shop that specializes in transmissions.

wow, you got a great deal! yeah ive looked up some local transmission repair shops around the area but alot of them dont have reviews which is why im wary of going through them. definitely gonna keep looking around, thanks for your help!

For that price difference, I think it's a no brainer. I definitely would go for a rebuild instead of a used.

If done right, you're basically getting a new transmission instead of a used unknown one, whose maintenance history, current condition, and remaining service life is unknown. Not to mention a better warranty.

Just make sure that the rebuild shop is reputable. If youre an AAA member call them up. See who they recommend. Do your homework.

Phil

just thought id provide an update for anyone interested (if anyone is lol). got the transmission rebuilt/axle replaced and turns out that i get to keep my 3ES instead of having to sell it for dirt cheap without a transmission(thank God!)

i plan on keeping this car for as long as i possibly can but having to deal with this nightmare of a repair and being w/o a car for around a month i believe some precautionary maintenance is definitely due with my car just having hit 158k miles. anything you guys would particularly recommend having checked out at this point in the car's life? also two things im hoping to get some input on:

1. when driving the car at ~65mph/+ i feel a decent amount of vibration in my seat. not to the point where its unbearable/scary but it is annoying. i think i remember reading on CL it was that if you feel vibration in your steering while while driving something is off in the front of the car and if you feel vibrations in your seat whilst driving something is off in the back. any ideas on what could be causing this?

2. previously my stock head unit had the issue that it wouldnt turn off even if i pressed the power button. (of course it would turn off when i turned the car off) but now the head unit wont turn on no matter how much i press the power button. any thoughts?

as usual, any help is greatly appreciated and im glad my life as a CL member wasn't really shortlived!!!

re: point one, tyres, wheel with dent, balance of wheel, bad wheel bearing, wheel troll.

re: point two, check the fuse. if not, then you'd have to remove it to check power on the pins in the plug.
