Default 93 Lexus ES 300 Overheating/Heat Blowing Cold Air

I have a 1993 lexus es 300. Lately its been cold in baltimore md which where I currently live at now. So a few days ago start it my car up and start it overheating to point that goes pass H. So it got to the point when I seen smoke come out the hood. I notice the smoke coming from the front cap of the radiator. So I let the car cool off for 4 hrs to do abit research of the problem. So I try to start it up again. It wouldn't start up. So I was trying to start the car up for 30 minutes. So it finally comes on. So I park it home and let guy look at my car. I told him exactly what problems I have with it. So we check the fluids and everything was fine but he told the radiator need anti freeze but I also notice my heat blows cold air too. So he check to see if any oil and antifreeze was mix to tell if the head gasket was any good which it was no mixture. So he assume it can be my thermostat or maybe my water pump need to be replace. Right now I have a hard time trusting mechanics in this city but do anybody know any good ones in the DMV area or possibly in baltimore ?

Sounds like you have lost a lot of coolant. If you saw smoke coming from the cap, check the gasket on the cap. It may have gone bad with age. Assuming you've added coolant, you can run the engine and look for leaks- from the radiator, hoses, reservoir, water pump. Or you can rent a cooling system tester at autobparts stores and find the leaks faster. Good luck

If it's cold outside and you're overheating, it's probably lack of coolant or lack of oil.

If you're overheating at highway speeds and the heater is cold, check your oil level.

What usually happens with my es300 is -if the oil is low- it'll blow smoke from the exhaust when starting the engine as the first sign. Then the heater will blow cold even when overheating. Then it'll start overheating like crazy way beyond the red.

If your engine doesn't start, that's another possible indication of low oil.

I could be wrong, but my theory is that the heater uses the heat from the oil. No oil = no heat.
