Default 1996 P0325 after having replace both Knock Sensors and Harness

Hello members,

This is my first post.

I just bought a 1996 ES 300 a week ago while visiting my dad in Utah. While in Utah my dad's friend replaced both knock sensors and the harness with new ones. We also replaced the coil pack on cylinder 4 that also sends spark to cylinder 3. The car ran like a champ.

I was with my dad's friend when he put the KS and harness in. We torqued every part to spec when we installed the new parts and reassembled.

I drove the car from Ogden, UT to San Marcos, CA (750+ miles), as I got to Vegas the power steering hoses began to leak so I had to pick up some ATF fluid to refill the reservoir. I will need to locate replacement hoses later.

A day later the CEL turns on, so I take it to PepBoys to get a scan and the code is P0325 and no other codes. I reset the computer and drove the car another 180 miles as I need to smog the car to register it, couldn't smog it until the EVAP check is complete. Yesterday the CEL came back on with the same code.

I am stumped. Maybe a intermittent short from the harness clip to the ECM?

After market Knock Sensors for this cars, although much less expensive, are notorious for not being fully compatible. There are several threads on this.

Is that what was done?

I think you are right. The knock sensors are aftermarket, the harness is from Toyota, I have tested the KN and harness with a volt meter and they are within spec but I am suspecting that the KN for bank 1 is defective.

Nothing major but I figure when it does throw the code the engine will retard the timing by a few degrees temporarily.

Time to tear it all apart again and use Toyota/Denso KS.

These cars like factory parts! You always pay more in the end going aftermarket...

My dad's friend ordered the parts. Lesson learned. The cool part is he is going to do the labor over at no cost and place in OE knock sensors.

Overall not bad.
