That would be a really good place to start.

What temperature does the engine get to before the code appears? You can use a OBD2 scanner to check the engine temperature. Is your water pump working? If the engine has in fact severely overheated, the head gasket may be bad. I wouldn't jump to conclusions though.

If you think the head gasket is destroyed, check to see if there is any coolant in the oil.. It will have a milky look to it.?

Take the advice of the above replies THEN Before you let the car go get a second opinion to verify that the head gasket is destroyed...... then (depending how bad it is) maybe you should try a cocktail like Blue Devil to seal the head gasket because sometimes a "band aid fix" can give you some extra miles. My theory is to do the job correctly and replace the gasket but some mechanics have good success by adding Blue Devil.

I did a quick search on this topic of the ES 300 overheating and it's unfortunately common with this model with numerous posts discussing this. Yes, head gasket replacement is the typical remedy fix for this issue.

The bad news: $975-$1000 for this repair at dealership, $750 for repair at independent mechs.

The choice is yours.

I should point out head gaskets are common for 92-93 ES300s with the 3VZ engine. 1MZ engines which were installed from 94-01 do not have head gasket issues unless the engine severely overheated.

You could buy a do-it-yourself kit from an auto supply store, that determines if there are any exhaust gases in your coolant reservoir. Its not expensive, (less than $30) and is almost a sure way to eliminate the guess work as to wether or not your head gasket is blown

Alternatively, some garages, and radiator shoare have the kit and are equipped to perform that test for you.

Well worth it before you spend major money on a potentially unecessary head gasket repair.
