Question Lean bank 1 & 2 Check engine turning on

Hey guys,

So I got a check engine light on my car, it had a really rough idle and would vibrate at different speeds. Took it into my mechanic and he said it was the variable timing solenoid and it needed to be changed because at times my car was running on only 3 cylinders.

He changed it to a used one, and while the car drives better now, the CEL still comes back on.

I went to a different mechanic and he read the codes and it said Lean Bank 1 & 2. He said to try cleaning the MAF sensor and replace the air filter. I went home and cleaned the MAF, reset the battery, and the light came back on 1 day later.

I'm not sure what could be the problem? He said since the variable valve solenoid is used, to try getting a new one in there instead.

What else could it be? Car drives fine for the most part, it did shut off one time after coming off the highway and coming to a stop at a light, but I turned it back on and it went.

Car has 253,000 km on it now.

Why would you buy a used one? Christ.

I just had this issue with a misfire, bought two aftermarket units since Toyota was about a weeks wait.

Problem solved.

The "dorman" solenoids are 100$ ish locally, 125$ OE at the dealer, or "dorman" 50$ ea. on rockauto if you can wait for it to ship.

Change both! And clean the little filters underneath the solenoids!

Don't know. I just hit mine with brake cleaner since they weren't gunked up at all.

It would help to know the exact codes. Think about buying a cheap OBD II reader.

I replaced both solenoids with new ones from rock auto.

The car still has the check engine light. Also before, the light would turn on and off on it's own, usually every second day or so.

What else could the issue be? So far the car runs fine...
