Default Repaired my MAF (but still idles rough)

Read posts of what NOT to do AFTER I removed the two screws on the connector of the MAF. Yup, DOH! (Another post said I would be doing that if I messed with my MAF!)

In trying to troubleshoot my rough idle (surges BAD!), I wanted to clean out the MAF. Went from rough idle to no start. As I soon discovered that I doinked my MAF, I had nothing to loose by taking the plastic cover off and see what was inside.

I tore three of the four (maybe five) contacts from the connector to the circuit board. I carefully re-soldered the connections and the car starts again! (yes, but still rough idle) Sorry, I didnt take pictures of the circuit board.

I've cleaned out the IACV but still rough idle. Runs fine at speeds above 10mph.

I removed the air filter cover to inspect filter to ensure cleanliness. "looked" clean.

BUT, by having the air filter cover slightly loose and not clipped closed, the engine idled fine!

Trying new air intake hose monday. I found a crack but I'm not sure if that is the final solution.

Any other suggestions? TPS?

A crack in the air hose would do it. While you wait for the new hose to arrive, you can temporarily patch it up with some duct tape and see if that helps.

If yur check engine light is not on, you may still have some codes in memory that you are not aware of, so check it out.

Also, I'm not convinced that your MAF Sensor is still functioning correctly.

BTW, what year s your car?

Phil

Thanks for your reply, Phil. My car is a 1993.

I'm not convinced about the MAF either. Not sure what to look at next if the new hose doesn't work. No check engine light. I thought codes were available on 94 and up? Never really bothered looking for an OBD port. Is there another way to view codes?

Try the air fuel ratio sensors... Swap them from bank to bank to see if it makes a difference

Wait for the new hose, and take it from there.

I also had a problem like this on my 93
I was experimenting with a new intake hose and filter when a friend of mind messed with the two screws on the maf sensor and it popped right out of the circuit board so after an hour of soldering it back together... rough idle!
I replaced the maf but my car still idles a bit rougher than before my genius friend tinkered with it .

any suggestions would be appreciated , im going to check the intake hose as stated above and see if that might be a factor in my case as well.
