I checked a local Toyota dealer for plug replacement for my 04 ES which has 107400 miles, still runs great, and they want the the VIN number so they can quote me the correct price? is this normal? car has been at this dealer for oil changes. Thanks for any help with this.

I've never heard of VIN being related to giving you the correct price.. generally VIN is used to verify that the part you are ordering is in fact going to fit your car. I would just ask them for the price regardless of VIN, not sure whether they are trying to determine whether you own a lexus or a toyota for the price... but maybe?

And every make/model has now diverted to a VIN-system for parts searches as it contains all proper information.

IE. a Camry comes in a Hybrid/I4/V6 configurations, and the plugs may not be the same for each. The vin discerns the difference in the parts catalog.

They ask for the VIN so they make sure to quote the exact parts your car needs. It's normal and in fact the proper way to do it.
