I've got a rattling up front which appears to be coming from the right strut. The struts themselves seem to be OK...they aren't leaking and they damp the springs fine. I know strut replacement is fairly expensive. Is the replacement of the strut mount only a significantly simpler task? Thanks in advance.

I have a simmilar knocking noise so I bought some strutmounts from PEP boys for $78 each. When I went to install them the shock piston would not quite fit through properly. All in all it was not a tough job, all you need a a spring compressor.
While I was under there I noticed that the right outer axle boot had ripped and the rest are starting to crack a bit from dry rot. So I checked out Advanced Auto Parts and each axle is only $66 so I am hopefully going to try and relplace them this weekend.

I recently replaced all 4 strut assembies...(two were free - extended warranty) and two purchased...That and 4 wheel alignment at a Carmax Dealership came to roughly $400 dollars. Always, replace them in PAIRS! (ie. front two and rear two).
