I just bought my 2002 ES300 and it has the Nav and ML sound system. Unfortunately it sounds like the rear sub is busted. I read (some) of the thread telling how to remove the sub, and some of what I read says that aftermarket components may foul out the other ML components. Do I need to get a ML sub to replace mine? Also, the other thread said that to get to the sub behind the back seat you would have to remove the rear seats and so on...but its clearly accessible through the trunk. o.O` Am I missing something there? I hope someone can help me out. Thanks!

To remove the rear subwoofer speaker you have to remove the backseat and rear dash piece. I don't recommend going through that trouble to be honest. Just disconnect the speaker wire from the trunk (bottom of speaker). Then you can use this speaker wire to feed into a completetly new trunk enclosed subwoofer's amp.

People that mention interfering with the ML system are referring to the ML stereo amp. It's designed specifally to power the speakers that came with the car. So Obviously you need to get an additional amplifier for a new subwoofer.

I too have a 2002 Es 300!with mark levinson. Only way to disconnect the wire is through the top. Not from the trunk. For the longest time I lived with the blown sub but finally I decided to take it apart. Only way is to remove rear seats, the back of the seat, remove one of the covers for the c pillars, remove the rear deck, and then you will have access to the sub. You have few things you can do at this point.
1. Disconnect the wire and put everything back and call it a day.
2. Take the sub out and glue the foam with silicon or something let it sit there and try it to see if its fixed. In my opinion this is a temporary fix. I tried it and within a day or two it was rattling again. This brings me to option 3.
3. Take the sub out, and send it out to be repaired. It will cost anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars. Mine cost me about $80. Got it back, put it in, works like a brand new speaker. Sounds awesome. Dint have to worry about matching the mounting holes or the impedance.
Never doing this project and doing it alone, it took me less than an hour to take everything out and then same time to put it all back.
