Smoking ES300
Hi,
We bought the 1999 ES 300 with 117000 miles last week,
The wife unit took out the Lex this week end. The check engine light came on, she had it scanned and it says the oxygen sensor has an issue.
I checked the oil before the 300 mile round trip. It's burning oil as I had to add oil when she got home . It smokes pretty good with start up and it smokes a little if I give it a little gas while in park.
Should i be concerned? Should I return it to the dealer? Am I worrying about nothing?

Just so i am clear, when you say seafoam treatment, you are ferring to adding the seafoam to the crank case as directed on the label correct?
What is a ballpark cost to redo the valve guides?

Probably be more then that. On an older engine like this it's probably a good idea to just rebuild because you'll end up doing a full head job and refreshed heads on old rings aren't a good combo. The seafoam might help if it's carbon buildup. I'd do the crankcase treatment and I believe it can be used in the fuel as well.

So today...
I come home from work, after stopping for a can of Seafoam. I start it up and there no more smoke today! What the hell? It was low a quart of oil when I posted the original thread. Would low oil cause the smoke?
Anyhoo... I checked the oil level added the Seafoam to the crankcase and fuel tank. I will change the oil once it has been in there a few days, if it gets dirtier sooner, ill change it sooner.
Also changed the air filter as it was needed.
Guess ill just watch it and see what happens

The PCV pick up the engine oil, and then go into intake and burn and output to tailpipe, so you will see the smoke when start.
Seafoam or Engine Flush could help half of it. But don't do it too much, it may cause engine seal leak.

Pull the front valve cover. Check to see how much sludge is evident. If there is an obvious build up of black sludgy looking stuff in the valve cover do this. Remove the rear valve cover and look for the oil drainback holes located midcenter in the head casting. Also look at the front head for this. Take a long screwdriver and clean out the oil drains. Clean out as much of the sludge as you can, and get it all, and replace the valve cover gaskets while you are at it. I'll bet they are hard as a rock!
You will need to remove the oil pan and clean in there as well. Making sure you get all of the broken up pieces of sludge you shoved down from the top. Clean the oil pickup tube and screen by taking it off and cleaning it. Make sure there is nothing inside of it.
You can probably save that engine if you do it now. I'm not sure of the comments above about the clogged PCV or a broken ring. A clogged PCV is not going to burn oil! How can it? It's clogged! A broken ring is well, just unheard of.... Whats going on is the PCV system is picking up the oil in the rear head. If the drainback holes are restricted, the oil pools in the head. The vacuum from the PCV is picking up that oil and sending it into the intake. The oil then pools in the intake and collects in an intake port, snuffing out your plug. Use the Denso plugs for it. Anything else will not work well!!!!
Take your time. This is a messy job but not hard by any stretch... Removing the upper intake will be the hardest part.

When you pull off the valve covers make sure you clean out all the valleys or ports where the air flows through . take out the PVC valve and blow air or solvent or water anything to wash out the sludge. both covers , they are rippeted on , Lexus doesn't even clean they replace with new valve covers . BUt probably is cheaper than the labor to clean them would be. And as others stated also the oil pickup tube\ screen at the oil pan . it will prob smoke every other day and 1-2 quarts of oil a month . Good luck

Hmmm.
Well it has only did the smoke thing once this week, where can I find the owners supplement manual mentioned in my owners manual? Or where can I get recommended maintenance schedules?

I would NOT have seafoamed the crankcase just yet but whats done is done.
No one has yet asked but what color is the smoke? You get your choice of Black, White, Blue, Grey. No others accepted ;-)

Seafoam, Monday evening, changed oil Friday. Only about 40 miles were put on it. The color was light, I am going to check it again if/when it happens again! I'm also see if I can get a sniff to see what it smells like. The oil wasn't very dirty, but clean now!

Does it smoke more after its parked with the front of the car facing either uphill or downhill?
If it does, than its probably your valve guides.
