Default 99 es300 rought idle, no brakes and rough driving

My lexus is broke. I had took it to the dealership after changing thd coil packs on them, and the spark plugs, as well as punching the front cat because it was glowing.red.when running.like crap. So a little code reader said it was cylinders 1,3,5 that were misfiring. I changed the plugs and bought six coil packs. Okay, nothing changed. I caved in and took it to lexusand the said it my vvt, or they think. They want 1000$ just to look at it. HELPPPPPPPP

I may be able to help you! Change your camshaft position sensor. Yours will be the one on the back bank (bank 1) of the engine because the that's where 1, 3, and 5 are. The camshaft position sensor tells the engine what speed to fire the coils at, so when it's broken, you get misfires on all three cylinders on that bank.

Here's a link showing a picture of the sensor and where to find it. It is the easiest thing to replace once you find it. One bolt (10mm) and you're good.

Good Luck!

There is potential that it may be the OCV valve (oil control valve) as this can get gunked up and get stuck, allowing lots of oil through. However, I think you should start with the camshaft position sensor.

Also, the reason your exhaust manifold is glowing red hot is because the frequent misfires are allowing unused gasoline through the engine and it combusts once it gets to the exhaust manifold. Hope this helps.

this happened to my dad's 99 ES, it was the VVTi OCV you can take it apart and clean it if you're feeling daring. or just purchase new ones and change it with a 10mm socket and flexible hands.

I'm pretty sure that the 1mz-fe engine doesn't have a distributor cap.

Did OP ever get this sorted out? I'm wondering what the code was ultimately and whether it was the oil control valve?
