Default Valve clicking? help please.

It's a '93w/automatic. I've been getting a ticking slappy rattley clicky smacking noise. (i don't know how to describe it, sounds like loose valves.) So I was sure it was the valves needing adjustment. (had the headgaskets blown, swapped them. and when the heads where out, apparently the buckets found themselves on the floor. My assistant didn't inform me at the time though...) so I pull the valve covers and do a check for the min and max clearances, and every one of them is in spec.

Imagine my surprise. Unfortunately now I either have another problem, or the range at which the clearances are set is a little lax and will allow for a little slapping..

Is there anything else that can make a ticky slappy kind of noise that sounds like it's coming from the valve cover?

If your valve clearances are good, the other thing that can cause rattling is the cam gear. When you remove them, you have to lock them in a pre-tensioned state using a bolt or else they will clang against each other when rotating.
Check this thread out about a guy who didn't lock his cam gears, apparently made a lot of noise! Good luck!
