Don't know what it is, but something is not right about this post. Or Something is missing in the scenario described.

Why is that a better solution?
If a car needs valve adjustment, it doesn't matter the brand or model.
All cars will last depending on how the owner maintained it including any preventative maintenance.
Everything breaks in the world so what happened to you was just part of life.
Can't blame the car.

DJP I feel your pain! I lost an engine on an 98 es300 at 157K. In my case I can honestly say it was maintained horribly (infrequent oil changes)so 157K was probably much more than I deserved. I had a "low oil pressure" warning light that would come on intermittently shortly before having the problem. These engines are very reliable and when they give you a warning it's best to take care of the problem immediately. If you think you can't afford the maintenance then you really can't afford not to have it done. $500 probably seems cheap now I bet.

I am planning to replace the motor but I do not plan on keeping the car too much longer. I am thinking of getting an SC300 or SC400, no more front wheel drive for me.

If I were him, I'd find out how much the car is worth as is and how much it's going to be to fix it. If that's more than it's worth running, sell it and buy an SC now.

SC300/400 is more expensive to maintain than the ES300....
If you are low on cash, u might not want to get a SC.

I am talking about the future when hopefully my financial situation improves. It is just that I have lost confidence in this car.
