Stock Subwoofer w/ aftermarket head unit 1998
Hello!
I have a 1998 lexus es 300 w/ premium nakamachi sound. I have purchased a kenwood dpx308u double din head unit and went to a place to ask how much it would be to install. He gave me a nice quote, but said that my stock subwoofer would not work with the head unit, and I'd have to buy another sub. Is there any validity to that statement?
Thanks in advance!

If you patch into the factory amp, then you can use the stock sub. This is because the factory amp has 5 channels of amplification: front left, front right, rear left, rear right, and sub. The factory amp also has a built in crossover, which will send only the low frequencies to the sub, while sending the higher frequencies to the door speakers. If you decide to bypass the factory amp and use the new head unit to power your speakers, it will only have 4 channels of amplification (front and rear door speakers). Most people will then take the "sub out" RCA connectors on the back of the head unit and hook up another amplifier that will power an additional sub. I guess you could use this additional amp to power the factory sub, but it wouldn't sound nearly as good as an aftermarket sub in a box. Or you could use a powered sub like a Bazooka; I've been using one of these, and it gives me a nice bottom end without taking up too much room in the trunk. It's not gonna win any contests, but it's certainly better than the stock sub. Hope that helps!
