Default PCV Grommet Disaster!!

Hey Guys,
Noob here, I have a 92 ES300 that had and old PCV Valve so i decided to do some maintanance and change it. It's the first time I've done this so I read a few post on here before I did and expected the old grommet to be hard as a rock! Well after pulling out the valve, I proceeded to pull out the grommet and it broke in pieces as expected. I managed to pull most out, but a big chunk ( about 1/4th of the grommet) was still in there when it fell off the tweezers I was using to pull it out and the piece disappeared. After struggling to somehow feel around with the tweezers and a screw driver, I gave up since I no longer felt the piece at all. I installed the new PCV valve and grommet and started up the car. I didn't seem to have any issues and actually had better idle than before replacing the PCV. Question is how bad is it that I left the piece in there and what could it damage? Would the thing just melt down or could it cause a blockage in something?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is a protective shield with little vent holes that will probably hold the piece in there. I don't think it will melt, otherwise your grommet wouldn't really be a grommet for the PCV valve. Luckily when I did this, I had the valve cover off the car, but what you experienced was also one of my fears. Worst case scenario, it falls into the engine and blocks an oil passage, so don't sweat it.

Mr Booby is spot on with his comments. I recently replaced my VC gaskets and cleaned mine thoroughly(fortunately took pics). Can't remember if the vent holes had 2 or 3 per but they are really small so no risk of that larger piece of grommet falling in. It will be trapped there isolated to that one place. No worries!

Had similar problem, so I used a vacuum to suck out broken pieces out of valve cover.

no worries, even if it does end up in the crankcase, it will be shredded to bits or get caught in the filter or oil screen or something. no biggie
