Question Wiper's won't retract

Hello:
New to the forum as I just bought a used 2002 Lexus ES300. Read the owners manual yesterday, but I didn't find the answer.. You turn the wipers on to say clear the windshield of the early morning dew, and when you turn them off, they stay in the position at the exact spot you turn them off at.. Are they not suppose to retract "automatically" to their resting position when you flip them off? They stop wherever they are at when you cut them off and do not retract. That doesn't seem right to me.. Is there something wrong with the wiper relay maybe?

Thanks for any advice..

The logic that makes the wipers "park" is inside the wiper motor unit, you probably need a new one of those.*

*This is general knowledge, not specific to the ES, though I am making an educated guess it is similar to most other wiper systems.

I've never seen wipers go back to their "resting postion", after you cut the power. It's actually one of my pet peeves, when people leave their wipers half way. Along the lines of leaving your wheels turned when parking.

^^He said "when you turn them off" I took that to mean turning the wiper switch off. They should def return to rest position in that case.

What's wrong with turned wheels when parking?? Recommended for parallel parking and no harm done in a parking lot why would you care? I hope you got better things to worry about ;-)

You're probably right. That makes more sense after rereading his post.

The wheel position - it's just a thing that I do out of habit. Being a perfectionist is most likely the bigger issue.

OK, not only will the wipers not return to the park position, but the wipers will not run on intermittent cycle either. There either on or off and they will not return to the park position unless you cut the switch off when it cycles down (have to time it just right).. I have been reading on the web, and you read posts that say "replace wiper motor" then your read other posts that say it is "wiper relay" inside the steering wheel which is the wiper shifter assembly.. So any mechanics out there that can clear up this issue !!
Thanks

Well according to the troubleshooting procedures in my service manual the parking logic is inside the motor, they show how to test it, if it doesn't work you replace the motor.

The intermittent functionality is inside the switch (what you call the "relay/shifter" is the wiper switch) however without the "parking" logic working, the intermittent function is not going to work.

So replace the motor, you need to anyways, then see if your intermittent works again, it probably will.

Did you ever figure out what was the issue? My 2002 ES300 is having exactly the same parking issue and I've replaced the motor to no avail.
