Transmission advice for 95 es300
I have a 95 es300 which is needing a replacement transmission, and in doing research for the job I've heard some conflicting viewpoints and want some that might have experience with it out there.
I've got some good used transmissions available but I want to make sure I get the best option.
A local Lexus enthusiast suggested I get a later model transmission which is stronger and would be better, so I'm thinking 97 on?
The Transmission shop said if I didn't get the same ratios the computer wouldn't handle it properly. Is he right on this point? I think 97 they started with VVT engines so ratios might be different.
JDM shows 95-96 to be the same transmissions. I have a line on a 95 and also a 97 but which one would be better do you think.
thanks in advance for the advice.

I'm by no means an expert on this, but if your car is a 95, then I would definitely go with the 1995 transmission if you have one available to buy (I THINK the automatics from 92-96 were the same but I'm not certain). 1997 is the year when Lexus switched to electronically controlled transmissions along with the new engine / body style. So you might run into a bunch of problems if you try to put a 1997 transmission in that car. Maybe someone on here who knows a bit more about this can give some input?

JDM grouped the trans's as 94, 95-96, 97- on. all as U541 Transmissions. The guy who suggested the later trannies was a 'tuner' and probably overlooked potential problems.
I tend to agree with you, i'll stick with the 95 it has to be simpler.
I was quoted 1500 to rebuild mine, he said the planetary gears were prone to failure on them.

I think you mean A541E. The A series transmissions are better than the later U series IMO, very solid units. The gear ratios were slightly different depending on the year/application so it's best to get a replacement out of the same car/year as what you have.
